Neuropathy - No cure but can we prevent it?

Posted by John, Volunteer Mentor @johnbishop, Feb 1 9:36am

All of us with neuropathy are focused on what we can do to provide relief for our symptoms but maybe we should also take a look at finding ways to prevent neuropathy. I thought we might be able to glean some information from this upcoming webinar.

FPN Webinar: Preventing Neuropathy with Dr. Shanna Patterson
Thursday, Feb 29, 2024 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CST

The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy (FPN) presents a one-hour program on a brand-new topic – the prevention of peripheral neuropathy. Please join us as FPN’s Patient Education Advisor, Shanna Patterson, MD, MS, an attending neurologist at Mount Sinai Health System, shares information about how people can prevent neuropathy. Educational information will also be shared for participants who already have neuropathy. A live Q&A will be held for audience members.

I have my drums in that avatar as a reminder that maybe one day there will be a cure so I can feel my legs again

There is no cure but there are many different treatments that may provide relief for the symptoms. I've mentioned these before but in case you haven't seen the list on Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy's website - https://www.foundationforpn.org/treatments/.

There are also many different discussions on Connect of treatments members have tried and shared their experience. You might want to read through the different discussions found using a search on "neuropathy what helps" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=neuropathy+what+helps

Same here and you say you got it four years ago. Sometimes I wonder about the COVID disease. All my symptoms occured at that time. To get peripheral neuropathy tinnitus IBS underactive thyroid dysmotility of osophaegus IBS and even pericarditis at the time which they had to monitor. The latter eventually went. I was extremely ill that year but there were no tests and I didn't have usual suspects symptoms of COVID. Strange though. My central nervous system seems to have been compromised very badly indeed. Still having jabs but wonder about them now too.

Is there any way to make non-diabetic neuropathy go away once you have it? It’s too late for me for prevention.

Yes it takes to long to find out what you are dealing with. Than no one has answers to why

I to have used red light therapy and electrical stimulation to my feet. Do these two methods work? Before treatment I was constantly up during the night with pain. Very soon after treatement pain was reduced to the point where I do not loose any sleep over it. I have been doing the electrical stimulation every day in the morning for 30 minutes and two minutes of the red light before bed. I consider myself healthier than 90% of the people on this forum so maybe I have a better chance. It has been 5.5 months since I started therapy. I am 64 year old male and the only drug I take is a blood preasure med.

I have been told, over and over again, that there is no way for non-diabetic PN to go away…
