Neck Crepitus

Posted by saganjames @saganjames, Jan 27, 2024

Anyone have a successful exercise to suggest for neck crepitus? Mine is on the right side of my neck, not painful, just a popping sound with certain movements, and slightly affecting hearing in my right ear at times.

Hi @saganjames, I had not heard the term neck crepitus but I'm sure a lot of us in the older generation have it to some degree. A few years back I took a safe driving class for 55 and over to get an insurance discount and one of the things we learned was neck exercises to help with your neck movement to help when driving. The exercises were the same as the ones described here:
--- Neck Arthritis: Exercises: https://myhealth.alberta.ca/Health/aftercareinformation/pages/conditions.aspx;

There is also a good explanation along with a link to more exercises at the bottom of this article.

I am a 19 year old female. I'm unsure when it started, but i get a faint sand-like sound when stretching my neck or just moving it in general. I feel like its gotten a bit worse as it seems almost constant now. I noticed it’s now making a snapping sound similar to a twig breaking mainly when I look up or chin tuck. i also experience those popping sounds near my my tmd even with my mouth closed.everyone online says crepitus is nothing to worry about but with everything else going on i am worried there’s only a matter of time for it to somehow get worse.I'm unsure if this could be related, but I’d experience an almost swelling/throbbing feeling on the left side of my throat that seemed to come and go.I ended up having a CT scan for my throat a week ago and everything came out fine. i was unable to tell the doctor at the time about my other concerns since she seemed to rush me out the room :(.. I'm unsure what to do now and I’ve so become hyper focused on my neck to where every day is filled with discomfort.

If you can communicate with the doctor via a patient portal, I would consider sending a message with all your concerns.

@burgerabbit you have to advocate for yourself I had an MRI a week ago and found out I have several levels of degeneration in my neck but I am also much older than you 62 years old. If your doctor doesn't listen change doctors.

Am 70 and have had neck crepitus from an early age, probably before I was 50 due to anxiety and stress. It is because I hold all my stress in my upper body, neck, shoulders. It has developed into degenerative discs in ALL my cervical (neck) vertebrae and even T-1 to T-3.

I see a neurologist because we are monitoring for when I will need spinal fusion in my neck.

Mean time: relaxation and massages are what help me cope with neck pain that shows up in spades now and again.

The sand like sound you mention is very interesting to me as I’ve never heard of anybody else describing this and I have had it periodically since I was a teenager too. I’m in my 50s now.

I’ve had X-rays which show lack of curvature in neck. Not sure if that’s connected. A chiropractor has told me to try not chin tuck if I can help it and to sleep with a very low pillow while on my back- sort of rolled under my neck w my head on bed(no pillow on back of head). And I have some arthritis in my neck too.
The sand sound does seem less often than it did in my teens and twenty’s. Plus I did have thyroid cancer at 40. Hoping all the best to you!
