Myectomy with valve replacement

Posted by @jillheart, Nov 25, 2016

Wondering if anyone here has undergone myectomy together with aortic valve replacement? I’m scheduled for consult at Mayo next week, on referral from my cardiologist, sound very likely they are recommending both procedures, and if so will plan it for late spring. Interested to know if this might add time to the typical recovery period. Thanks!

Hi Jill, welcome to Connect.
My apologies for not welcoming you sooner. For some reason my notifications were turned off for the HCM group. That has been corrected now 🙂

There are a few members who have had both a myectomy together with valve replacement. @lamborama just had this done at Mayo earlier this month. @lepadelford and @rmcmillan a while back. I hope they will share their experiences with you. @cynaburst, do you know who else from our group has had both procedures done?

Jill, did you see this discussion on Connect “What is the recovery like following septal myectomy?” https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/what-is-the-recovery-like-following-septal-myectomy/
When is your consult?

Hmmm. The approach they take for a myectomy is thru the aortic valve. I.e. they trim the muscle by holding the aortic valve open and then pushing the tools through the opening but I have not heard of an aortic replacement afterward, though I suppose they could do it after the myectomy. I have heard of people getting a mitral valve replacement at the same time, but not an aortic.

Thanks for getting back – I did look at the recovery discussion earlier, and will look through again, especially from laborama. Coming on Wed 11/30 for testing, will see Dr. Nishimura and Dr. Schaff on Thursday. Trying to get my list of questions together!

Thanks for getting back…I’m sure much will be revealed to me later this week!

Jill, did you see this webinar Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and the Surgical Treatment Apical Myectomy given by Dr. Ommen and Dr. Schaff? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/hubcap/webinars/ They have such a great way of explaining things and using diagrams. I think you might find it helpful in preparing for your appointment on Wed.

Yes, the webinar was really good at explaining how the operation works and has great schematics.
