My results after 1 year of Evenity

Posted by hikernurse @hikernurse, Oct 22, 2023

I finished 12 months of Evenity in early October 2023 with thankfully zero significant side effects (a little tiredness, headache for a day or so) I am 67. My story is posted on my home page. I did maintain a good diet, exercised, walked, hopped, stomped, yoga, aqua dance, heel drops, stood on one foot whenever I could, ate prunes daily (5), eat my own L reuteri yogurt that I ferment, took algaecal plus (which only has trace strontium, not to be confused with strontium boost which I DID NOT take care for 2 grandchildren ages 2 and 4 twice a week. My point is I am pretty active. I had 4 previous separate fractures, 2 rib from hiking/biking falls and 2 wrists one from a fall off a few steps and another just weeks after my August 2022 DXA before I started meds. I was hiking in MT (mid September 2022) and turned to check on hubby and in an instant my foot hit a rock and I went down hard onto a rock. I shattered that wrist but had surgery and it healed. Started Evenity November 2022 (after covid) and after much research and medical opinions. Every morning I read the osteoporosis blogs from Mayo and have learned so much. Dr McCormicks Great Bones book is getting dog-eared.
I’m listening to Doug Lucas you tubes. We are all different but we are all trying so hard to help ourselves and really would rather not do meds but sometimes we just have to.

My bones did what Evenity said they would do. Spine went from -3.1 to -2.6 a 13.8% increase, femoral neck went from -3.3 to -3.0 a 7.5% improvement and total femur -3.0 to -2.7 a 5.4% improvement. Appointments and bloodwork in the next few days/week to see what’s next. I think I know the answer and I’m struggling. I believe it will be Prolia and I’m PANICKED about that. Concerned about time interval before starting. I will be having a CTX, not sure if that will help. I still have severe osteoporosis but the most important thing is I haven’t had a fracture!!

Any suggestions thoughts much appreciated.

why are you panicked about Prolia? I would be more nervous about Evenity due to risk of stroke and heart attack. I am on Prolia.

well I already had 1 year of evenity with zero side effects and 22.8% gain in spine and 9% hip. the first year of alendronate held the gains and even increased them and the second year they began to decline. I have zero cardiac issues and had a coronary calcium score which was zero. I have exercised my entire life and continue to do so. A second round of evenity was recommended. This time I may follow with ONE dose of Prolia followed by reclast. Prolia concerns me greatly because of the rebound if you ever stop. I’m a ‘young’ 69 so not ready to commit to a lifetime of Prolia. Atypical femur fractures as well as osteo necrosis of the jaw concerns me or the need for dental work later as sadly I do have many crowns that are healthy now but not sure about the future. Best to you

@hikernurse Good for you, I am glad you did not have any issues with Evenity. But with all of these bone medications, you probably have to be on them for life.

Congratulations @hikernurse. What a valuable response you have written. Honest and thorough. I only have one concern and that is the future of Prolia for you. I had real problems with Prolia after 2 years of Tymlos. After 1 year with Prolia, I sought help at Mayo Clinic and was released from Prolia.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris

@artscaping so release from petrol ia but what did you do them fir medication? I finishing evenity going to mayo endo if i had know terioartide was better than evenity for spine I would went on it. Now im am ending evenity but in the middle of a fusion 7 months ago. Had I done terioartide I would been able to have a year of teripartide to build my bone in the healing fusion g phase of my fusion. Im so pissed at mayo endo he just gave me script for teripartide didn't tell me it was better for spine than evenity and now I'm screwed literally from having another bone builder during my fusion healing when I need it to build my bones. He say I have to do reclast iv or oral alendronate. I want 2 yr of teripartide now I will not be able to ever do teripartide after 3 yearly infusions of reclast because it will have screwed up my bone building cells by repressing them they will never wirk again. I need to find endo or rheumatologist who will prescribe teripartide 2 years to get its benefits of bone building : not a bone killing reclast yet. Till my bones are out of isteopenia. I failed previous alendronate pill 7 years lost bone every year. So I dont want reclast too mant risks of long term shit it stays in Body 10 years. Who was your endo at Rochester? THEY none of them are going to go off label and give me another bone builder to see screws and rods stay in me. If I do recladt bone builders may not work. Reclast may not work or I get on ruin my jaw I'm only 69 I dont want to risk it. He did not tell me anything about a good sequence or what was best to sequence these drugs for the ultimate optimal outcome of my fusion for a good fusion and not a failed one. Im doomed now . He told me nothing should have sat down with me to discuss pros and cons of all drugs before choice. He just texted me script. I did not see him..phone consult. He went over none of drugs do they work how to sequence them to best outcome for my new fusion. No compariso . Didn't tell me teripartide better for spine. Could had another year of bone builder for early fusion what I need now. Their study involving evenity then teripartide only gave 12 months teripartide. It was meant to be given in 2 years for reason it may gave goid results if they continued both drugs in the study to what they were manufactured for. So they skewed the study by not doing teripartide for 2 years comparing evenity 12 months head to head; they didn't do it now i suffer no bone. Builder in my after fusion year.

Yes you can take either Alendronate or Reclast to " lock in " any gains that you get from Evenity per my Endocrinologist. I did not have any " gains" but I choose Alendronate rather than Reclast because I was worried about the side effects of the huge amount of medication you receive with Reclast. Good luck with your decision.
