My ostomy leakage solution

Posted by dona46 @dona46, May 9 9:15am

After an illosomy last Jan, I spent over a year struggling to eliminate leaks. My home nurse and several pouch manufactures tried to make useful suggestions. I tried "skin Protecters", paste, seal rings of different sizes and materials, several adhesive removers, alcohol wipes, and many different one and two piece pouching systems

At best I could wear a pouch 3 days and would still get leaks every week or two. Just enough to make me very uncomfortale leaving the house.

But the good news is I am now appreciating a month or 6 weeks leak free. In fact after all the recent pouch changes there has never been any sign of even a little leakage around the stoma. In the past there was almost always signs of leakage extending away from the stoma when the pouch was removed after 3 days. And I have discontinued use of paste, seal rings, alcohol, and skintac. I am not sure any of them really helped, but they were suggested so I was using them.

I think the breakthrough was showering AFTER using the adhesive remover. During the shower I wash the area with ivery soap, then shave around the stoma rinse then wash again using "Checks and Balances" face soap. After drying off, I use a hair dryer to warm the adhesive and apply the device to my skin.

I am very happy to report this seems to be working well for me.
I hope my experience helps others.

@dona46, it's great that you've found something that works! It took me about 2 years before I found something consistent. And now that's been working for over 20 years.

Thank you for sharing, it's so helpful when people report success stories as well as the problems.

My wife. She has ben fantastic! She has done so much "special laundry", my clothing, bedding and even our furniture have ocassionaly have all needed special attention cleanups. I have yet to change a pouch without her help.
Next would be my two adult children, and friends and neighbors. They have all been extremely supportive and helpful especially in the months just after surgery.

This discussion group has helped me in many ways, including leading me to a fellow ostomate Marian Liska in far away Slovakia. He posted here that he had built a tool for cutting pouch openings to desired size. I was frustrated with hand cutting and the precut pouches were only available in sizes too small or too large. I contacted him (liska@enviteam.sk) and eventually I was able to get his "Octopus" machine built to cut perfect 27 mm holes which fit my stoma nicely. He also has other things he is working on to make ostomates lives easier. He has become a solid friend who has given me several helpful ideas.

Finally, I have a friend who is an excellant craftsman with a 3D printer. He has made a few plastic parts for me. One of them is the stoma protector (pictured below) that slides into the cover of pouches made by Hollister and Coloplast. It allows me to have a waist band or even a belt pass right over my stoma without blocking the output,

Thanks for your helpful comments! I too have started washing after using the adhesive remover. I am going to try your hairdryer tip.

@dona46 Your friend could sell his stoma protectors! I am always looking for comfortable elastic pants and shorts because a waist band and belt isn't comfortable any longer.

What did you find that works for you?

That’s great.May I ask what device you are using now. I was doing great with no leakages using the ring etc and then all of a sudden I keep getting leaks.

REPLY

I now use Cloroplast two piece system. With convex-flip piece on my skin. That connects to the pouch with a 50 mm snap connector. Cloroplast samples are available free of charge.

@pidge32 I kept trying different brands, and different combinations. Flat, convex, different wafer materials. Different barrier rings. I kept a spreadsheet so I could remember what I had tried. I worked with the WOCNs and tried their suggestions.

What I wound up with is Eakin Seal around the stoma, Coloplast Sensura Mio Extra Extended flat wafer, Coloplast Sensura Mio drainable pouch without a filter.
