My Mom (who Never got sick before)

Posted by celticxian @celticxian, Dec 14, 2023

My 82 year old mother, who is never ill, took the vaccine January and February of 2020 and got deathly ill in October 2020. She has long Covid and has been fighting it since. She passes out, is dizzy and has been to the ER 3 times since due to passing out and foaming at the mouth. One time her head hit the bottom drawer of the refrigerator and it left an indentation! She also has brain fog, hot and cold flashes all day, and fatigue beginning in mid afternoon. She has been to countless specialists with no answers. At least 13 doctors. She has her good days and bad days.

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry. I empathize with your mom. I have some similar symptoms, the hot and cold flashes I assumed was a post menopausal symptom (I’m 53). Same thing with me and a lot of others in this support community, sooo many doctors, test, procedures and nothing.
I’m sending prayers for you and your mom. Hoping she has a complete healing!

Just shows that the vaccine doesn't help everyone...

The vaccine decreases the severity of covid, rather than preventing it. Using the vaccine kept more people out of the hospital and morgues. Also, people that are immunocompromised or older generally have weaker immune systems (one reason why covid hit older folks the hardest).
I'm 69 and got the covid vaccine 6 months before I caught covid after sitting next to an asymptomatic infected person in a van for an hour (high viral load, plus vaccine effectiveness in oldsters decreases through time). I would have been much sicker if I hadn't been vaxxed. Statistically, the hardest hit by covid were older, immunocompromised, and unvaccinated.

I have all the symptoms your mother has. I am 52. I have POTS which causes the dizziness and passing out. I wear an abdominal binder that does help. I have only had a few passing out episodes since wearing this. I would suggest getting your mom compression socks or an abdominal binder. I have neuropathy, LC attacked my autonomic nervous system. I have horrible pain in my feet and hands and my right foot has CRPS - extreme neuropathy which causes horrible pain, swelling, changing colors (red or purple) - can't walk on it all the time. So I do not wear compression socks. I went through 3 years of countless doctor and testing before I ended up at the Long Covid Clinic. I would look to see if there are any near you. I still have issues, good days and bad, but they have helped me. Mentally it helps to have doctors who know you are sick and have plans of action. Everything LC triggered in me is incurable. I am learning to manage through medicine and physical therapy. I wish your mother good luck in this very difficult journey. I hope she can get the help and understanding she needs from a medical clinic. It is wonderful she has you and that you believe her and are looking for help.

First, I am so sorry that you are going through all of this! Second, I'm right behind you. As I am writing this my feet are in excruciating pain . Could you tell me what they are doing to help you?
I have some guidance from the Long haul covid clinic in Boston, but still no help with the inflammation in my body.

I am sorry you are going through this as well. I see the LC Clinic at Johns Hopkins. I also have a Rheumatologist and a Physiatrist at UVA. I have a Physical Therapist at Johns Hopkins. PT is moving really slow but is mentally and physically helping. Any small exercise I can do makes me so happy. I am taking 120 mg of Cymbalta and 900 mg of Gabapentin daily. I am wearing Oofos recovery shoes. They are not pretty but I love them. Sadly I have a foot surgeon too. I had to have reconstructive foot surgery on my right foot due to my right leg and foot going numb and my having awful falls that destroyed my foot. My foot recovered from this nasty surgery then actually started feeling insanely worse which I did not think was possible. I have CRPS in my right foot - extreme neuropathy. With the medicine and shoes, I have not had to crawl around the house in months. I do have a cane and a walker thing with 4 wheels. I hated getting them but I hate being unable to move around more. I don't leave the house much because of my immune system but these things help if I do. Luckily I can work from home. My pain will intensify if I get sick or the barometric pressure changes. But I have seen improvement. I will take anything that helps my quality of life. I have a really good team of doctors now. It took years to get here. The trouble is not all doctors are up to speed with LC. I would start looking for a Physiatrist not just a regular pain management doctor. I would also see a Rheumatologist. I had to go through several Rheumatologists before I found the one I have now. All of my doctors can access all my health records. This is really important so they are all aware. I wish you good luck. I hope you can find help. Let me know if I you have any other questions.

I wanted to add, I have inflammation but I take medicines to help with my nerves. They are the cause, not the symptom. They did not find my neuropathy until the LC clinic ordered biopsies.
