My Mayo psychiatrist wants me to find a new one!

I guess she/he is overworked.
I’m on Medicare.
No psychiatrists in MN will see me. A few non-MD’s will, but what does that say about Mayo? About psychiatry as whole? It’s funny, but not in a good way.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Mental Health Support Group.

I was told to contact Nystrom. But I noticed that they don’t list any psychiatrists in Rochester! I only want to see an MD, because non-MD’s can’t monitor my psych meds. I don’t need much “talking.” I’ve had a lifetime of that.

Go to the Mayo mental health support group? That’s like telling someone who’s in a car wreck, “Go to the car wreck support group!” LOL.

@emanresu Did your psychiatrist tell you why they want you to seek our a psychiatrist somewhere else? Usually when a physician suggests that a patient go to another practice they will provide the patient with a list of other practitioners. Did your psychiatrist provide you with such a list?

Thanks for responding.
The psychiatrist told me I should see a therapist. He suggested Nystrom, but I don’t need a therapist. I’ve been talking with psychologists off and on for 53 years. YES. 53 of my 65 years. The only thing that has made a difference are the psych meds I’ve been prescribed. I called Nystrom and couldn’t even get an appointment with a psychologist. That’s okay: there is nothing a psychologist can help me with. I need to have my psych meds re-evaluated or replaced.

In the last town I lived in, I saw a person who was a psychiatrist and a therapist. That was ideal! But that was a thousand miles from here.

I find this "funny" in that we all want different things! I don't want the Psychiatrist who only wants to know about the meds and never wants to know anything about your mental health! I had a Psychiatrist who was great at monitoring the meds, but he also wanted to know everything about how I felt, how I was thinking, how I was dealing.....he was the Best, but he had to retire due to health issues. What a loss that was to me. I have never been able to find anyone who even came close to replacing him. I now just get my meds thru my PCP, which I am sure is not the ideal thing to do. But, anyway, I do think it is "funny", in a good way, how we can differ so drastically in what we want! LOL!

I just remembered something else: I wrote to the “resident doctors departments” at both Mayo and the University of Minnesota, to see if I could get a resident psychiatrist to follow me, because they’re supervised by faculty psychiatrists. Neither responded. I could call and see what they say, but I may have my answer already.

Don't take it personally! Dr.s are just people like you and me. They get stressed, tired, overworked. Ask he to refer you to someone you can go to

I like your idea of getting a resdent to follow you. Let me know if you find our anything further. Hopefully, the answer is not a NO, but it sounds like the lack of response may indicate that? This would be a great way to take some of the pressure off of the overburdoned Drs!
