Anyone developed severe stomach pain on chemo + immunotherapy?

Posted by madlydancing @madlydancing, Oct 6 6:50am

My husband has HPV positive tongue cancer that has spread to his right side neck lymph nodes. he also has IBS. He has had 2 rounds of chemo and Immunotherapy. He has developed severe diarrhea and lower abdominal pain. His dr recommended Imodium for the diarrhea and a BRAT diet. He is losing weight and is extremely fatigued. Has anyone had this problem? Any suggestions on how to stop the pain?

@madlydancing, it must be so hard to see your husband in such pain. It sounds like the GI side effects of treatment are hitting him extra hard because of his pre-existing irritable bowel syndrome.

Has the Immodium helped at all? Did the oncologist suggest anything for the pain?

@colleenyoung He finally is taking his Dr's advice and is taking the Immodium. As far as pain meds, his palliative Dr as prescribed oxycodone for his throat pain. He barely takes it because he is so scared of the constipation effects which induces more pain. I finally got him out of the house. We went for a long drive and I noticed his pain level dropped. I have studied pain for years due to my own health issues. I learned from a therapist that works with people who have chronic pain, that pain is generated in brain. There is a lot of information about the brain's neuroplasticity and how to break the cycle of chronic pain, in my husbands case - IBS.
Collen, every day there appears to be something new and scary. I'm trying to take things a day at a time.

@madlydancing you are in the terrible position of caregiver where you share the suffering of your spouse and must manage all the medical issues as well. With a palliative care team they should be able to manage pain, if he will be compliant with medications. Is he on any medications for his IBS? Has his gastroenterologist been contacted about the new inflammation from Keytruda plus chemo? When I was on an immunotherapy similar to Keytruda my oncologist warned of diarrhea as a side effect and that sometimes lowering the dose or using other medications to get this under control. Keep in touch with all of the team. I use Manuka honey daily and I know it can have a calming effect on the GI tract. You might want to research it. My husband was exhausted when he was on Keytruda for 4 months for bladder cancer, but no diarrhea.

@sepdvm thank you so much for this information. I will pick up the honey today. His GI dr told him to take Imodium. He also feels that the his pain and diarrhea is due to the PTSD from his past experience with radiation. I disagree. I live with him and I see that every time he eats somethhing he will shortly develop pain and will have to go. We have contacted is oncologist for a referral to a GI dr that works with cancer patience.

I am so sorry you are going through this. You are doing everything right - communication, analysis, looking for solutions. Sometimes, just reducing the symptoms is helpful.
