Multiple Sclerosis and Gut Health

Posted by msbattler @msbattler, Nov 29, 2021

Do you think by healing a leaky gut, we can maybe heal our MS, or symptoms maybe a better way of putting it. Did a leaky gut cause our MS in the first place? The best way to repair a leaky gut?

Hi @msbattler, your question intrigued me. I had no idea that this was link that is being researched. This article gives a nice plain language overview with links to multiple research studies and evidence.

I'm also tagging fellow MS members like @seanmay23 @helenlodahl @kip170 @kco @chris462 @asquires @ydawson @chefbrown @tashanharrell @disneyfan and @babettelizardo to see if they have any thoughts.

MSBattler, do you have gastro-intestinal issues? How are they being managed?

Hello @msbattler and @colleenyoung

This is also of interest to me. There has also been evidence linking Parkinson's Disease with gut issues, including leaky gut. I find it interesting that two neurological issues can be tied to the GI tract. As I've had three surgeries of the upper GI tract I am interested in seeing how this research unfolds.

Here is a link to some websites that discuss this interesting correlation,

I know my MS is caused by my leaky gut. I made smoothies for my self containing blueberries, strawberries, bananas, green powder, probiotics and flax seed milk every day for a year and I reversed my gut health and my MS. I went from walking with a cane and a leg brace for drop foot to walking just fine today. My problem is my gut is leaky again and I was hoping for a more permanent solution. Does anyone have a formal for fixing leaky gut?

I had a leaky gut years ago, unfortunately I don't believe there is a formula that will help everyone but I can tell you what I did. I went to what is called a doctor of functional medicine. If you don't know what that is they are doctors, usually of internal medicine, who have also specialized in functional medicine. They know a lot about nutritional issues and gut health. This doctor with the help of nutritionist, helped me reverse mine in a little less than a year.

Hello @christinebuchar and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Gut health is such an important topic. I actually found an existing discussion on MS and gut health so you will notice that I have moved your post here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/multiple-sclerosis-and-gut-health/

I wonder if you've researched collagen for gut health? I've found the following information that you may find helpful.

Have you already included a type II collagen into your diet?
