Multiple sclerosis and Mental Health

Posted by trinitylm @trinitylm, Jul 14, 2023

Does anyone have experience with mental health and MS? My mother has dealt with depression for years and in the last month has debilitating anxiety. She has found little relief after years of trying various medications. What has it been like for you or your loved one? Have you ever been to Mayo's psychiatry department? What is it like? What is the process?

Luckily, my mom has an appointment at Mayo in August. I hope and pray they help her.

@trinitylm welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. My experience with Mental Health comes from being a licensed (M.A. level) psychologist. My experience with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) comes from being a care giver of a man that had MS. My experience has taught me that physical conditions have a profound effect on mental health. All the various aspects of an individual (physical, mental, emotional & spiritual) need to be addressed for optimal health and wholeness. I am unfamiliar with Mayo’s psychiatry department but their other departments have stellar reputations. Mayo typically takes a collaborative approach to get to the bottom of problems. My hope and prayer for you and your mother is to find some help at your August appointments. Will you keep me updated?
