Mucus in throat

Posted by karen10225 @karen10225, Jul 24, 2024

I constantly have mucus lining my throat even after saline nebulizer. This makes me have to clear my throat all day. Does anyone have a suggestion for this? I am really growing weary and wondering how to get through each day. I have had bronchiectasis for 20+ years and mycobacterium simiae for about 4 to 5 years. I have chosen not to treat due to many other health conditions. All I can do is airway clearance, some exercise and eat a decent diet. I see my doctors every six months, but that really isn’t much help. HELP

Hello, yes I do 7% saline everyday. It helps with airway clearance and to get the sputum out. But there are times of the day, such as being at work, out in public, or driving in the car, I get a sudden tickle that won't go away. In times like this I need the castor oil. Since I've been on Arikayce, it's really increased my sputum... I went from 1 to 10 on a scale. Though the excess mucus/sputum is irritating, I look at it as a good thing. I'm getting the bacteria out of my lung.

Did you mean cod, liver oil? That is a totally different thing than castor oil.

Bonniesue, I have been treated for GERD for about 20 years. I have other gastrointestinal conditions that agravate GERD. I follow a very strict diet (no caffeine, chocolate, mint, carbonated drinks, fast foods...) My bed is elevated and I sleep on my left side. I eat very small meals and I don't eat or drink anything 3 hours before bed. My last meal is at 5:30 pm ( too early for me, specially in summer time). I also struggle with not drinking after 6:00 pm, I am always thirsty.

I do the vest with albuterol nebulizer, and follow it with aerobika with saline 3b%nebulizer. I find that when I get to the saline and aerobika , I bring up tremendous amounts of mucus.
In addition to that, I wake up with at 1/4 least half a cup of mucus in my throat, most mornings
I still have mucus even after doing about seven rounds of the aerobic 10 times each. It does get less, but is it OK to leave some?
For now, I’m just doing this once a day
my Pulmo switched me back to once from twice a day because I was getting very exhausted

Does everybody do this twice a day and how do you have any energy left to exercise. The aerobic art particularly takes an enormous amount out of me.
PS I have BE 3 lobes
If I’m clearing out my mucus, why do I get so much more when I wake up in the morning. It’s always a different color. It’s always yellow whereas the mucus I’ve bring up with the aerobic, etc., is mostly green. Thank you Jill.

Yes, have Be in lobes after almost 2 years of pneumonia, which did not get eradicated by any antibiotic, so my doctor started me on airway clearance

Interesting. I have been wondering about my sinuses. Every morning when I wake up I cough up mucus for about 15 minutes and have to blow my nose about 20 times. After that my nose is clear for the rest of the day, but the mucus in my throat stays. I had been drinking all my liquids warm, but stopped when the weather got so hot. I am going to try going back to warm liquids too see if that will help my throat. Thank you for your response and giving me something to think about.

FYI, after continuous bouts of pneumonia Ucla recommended that I have both sinus and hernia surgery. No one mentioned BrONC for a whole year and a half.
I had a large hernia that they felt was contributing bacteria to the trachea, and also chronic sinus infection infections
I did both surgeries in 2025 2024
My pneumonia came back and my be grew from one lobe to three lobes , so I’m not so sure how much surgery will accomplish

I feel like I’ve been through a lot of unnecessary surgeries when a proper diagnosis and intervention early on could have treated the BE when it was in one lobe

What has helped me is first thing in the morning I blend a half lemon and about and inch or 2 of peeled ginger root and pinch of Himalayan pink salt in about a cup of room temp water. I blend in my mixer then strain and sip on this. It seems to clear my throat of the mucus.

Your story sounds so similar to mine. I also have a small hiatal hernia and even though my doctors never say it could be a problem, now I wonder? I have the mucus in my throat almost all day as well. I drink only water also.
I am losing hope that doctors know enough about this disease to help much. So I stick with saline nebulizer, good diet, and whatever exercise I have the energy to do. I wish I had some good tips for you, but I am at a loss. Mostly now I am just anxious and scared! Thank you for sharing your story.

I also have thick mucus in my throat and usually cough up a mucus plug at some point during the day. It is so annoying and embarrassing. I also have a small hiatal hernia that my doctor has dismissed, so I was surprised the hiatal hernia was mentioned as a mucus producer. I will have a test for gerds next week. I'm not sure how or why but I also have a frozen vocal chord. I'm not sure if all these things are related or happenstance but I would really like some answers.

In case this helps someone, I gargle with salt water right before bed. This not only stops the coughing that usually starts up for a bit when I lie down but also clear the mucous in my throat.
