Mk4 vs Mk7 for osteoporosis

Posted by crbarefoot @crbarefoot, Mar 15 12:32pm

I have osteoporosis and a condition where I cannot exercise. I also have elevated lp(a) which increases cardiac risk. I have read studies that show mk4 in a daily dose of 45 mg is used to treat osteoporosis in Japan. Either in one 45 mg dose or divided 3 doses daily. It may also be combined with mk7 once daily. Mk7 has a much longer half life and stays in the body longer. Does anyone have any experience with this and any specific brands they might recommend for mk4? I just want to direct all my calcium to my bones and not my arteries, as much as possible. Thanks !

I have read that study and listened to a podcast with Dr. John Neustadt who recommends K supplementation as part of an osteoporosis treatment plan, based on this research.

I take a combined MK4 and MK7 supplement at much lower dosages.

I searched for supplements that provide the recommended amount of K from the study and there aren’t many. Dr. Neustadt sells a product that includes this dosage. I haven’t taken it but it seems like it might work for you.

In the end, I decided to stick with what I was doing for now.

I would also love to hear from anyone whether this has worked for them.

Hopefully others will chime in. Which supplement have you chosen to stick with?

@crbarefoot I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BWH7QPX6

1000 mcg of MK4
100 mcg of MK7

Looks like it’s currently unavailable. I hope it’s back in stock soon.

@oopsiedaisy thanks. That looks like a good choice, and I hope it is in stock soon. I am leaning toward trying the supplement from Dr. John Neustadt that has the 22.5 mg twice daily of MK4. And I will still take my 100 mcg of MK7 along with 5000 d3.

Thanks for the recommendation

I'm curious if anyone has used the higher doses of MK4 - no meds - and seen dexa results.

@dvargo yes, thanks. That is a good choice. I am just interested in the higher dose twice daily MK4. But I do like Life Extensions products.

I started seeing an interventional medicine specialist for support to address the big picture with regard to health and nutrition goals related to osteoporosis management and one of her recommendations was switching from Vitamin D3 capsule to Orthomolecular D3/K2 drops. The K2 is primarily from MK7 which has a longer half life and better bioavailability than MK4. I get this (and other supplements she recommended) through Fullscript (us.fullscript.com) which is an online dispensary for supplements that she felt has superior quality control and sourcing and is reasonably priced ($33 for a bottle which will last several months). There are so many ways to support better bone health that are not addressed by most traditional medical specialists. I have learned about many through this forum which has prompted me to do more research and this ultimately led me to the Interventional Specialist who, so far, has been very valuable. I hope this is helpful!
