Mild ankle swelling seems to be caused by oral minoxidil

Posted by tillymack @tillymack, 2 days ago

I've noticed mild ankle swelling when taking oral minoxidil 2.5 mg for hair loss (androgenic alopecia). My podiatrist says this is so slight it's nothing to worry about but I do worry! Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you.

The hair doctor suggested a list of options. I was already taking Minoxidil. The DO prescribed KetoConozole shampoo 2%. It’s for fungus but has proven effective for androgenic alopecia. I think this shampoo is what has made my hair thicker. I now use a lot of conditioner and an additional leave in conditioner.

I think the red light therapy is also helpful. The cap was very expensive, but has a money back policy.

Hi Celia16 Thanks for the list of options! I noticed the conclusion of the blog noted that: Ketoconazole shampoo has positive and can have negative effects for your hair condition. It is a good remedy against hair loss, but other ingredients that are almost the same as ketoconazole such as piroctone olamine can also help you with your hair loss or scalp condition. For thicker hair and more growing hairs, piroctone has proven to be more effective than ketoconazole. Both sound great but what do you think about the Piroctone olamine shampoo? On the topic of red light therapy, do you see any baby hair growing? Thanks again!

@tillymack , I’m interested in that solution if it’s a better option to the shampoo. I’ll try it. That shampoo really does make it seem thicker though. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments on my hair! But, I work hard styling and using products. If the other solution is better, I wonder why she didn’t prescribe it.
I have a back story with this medication I used it in the form of a body wash in August 2023. I won’t insert what happened here, but it caused me a taste issue for a long time. I think. I can’t be certain what caused it. Around the same time I got taste, smell disorder, hair loss, muscle issues, tingling, etc.

Yes! I do have new hair growth around my face, ears, temples! I’m excited! But, I’m also only a few months on the autoimmune med Hydroxychloroquine. My inflammation seems to be way down. So, I have a lot going on….

I wondered about that too. There may be some reason it would not be best for you as an individual or maybe she is more familiar with the shampoo she prescribed and feels better about prescribing that for you. You are so fortunate to have a doctor who takes an interest and knows many things to try. Could you share how you found such a great doctor? It sounds like you had a terrible response to the body wash... Glad to hear the new shampoo and autoimmune med are producing new baby hair! That's great news!

@tillymack , thanks! It’s difficult to get hair loss attention, imo. I guess it’s easier to get advice if they know what’s causing it. I have been seeing Duke Dermatology for years even before hair loss for my psoriasis. No flares since I started treating hair loss in 2023. I also use clobetasol foam on my scalp after each wash. It fights inflammation too.

To get more hair loss expertise I went to Dr. Angela Phipps (DO)of Bosley. She’s awesome! I am very pleased with her guidance. She prescribes some things. She says to keep my dermatologist though. I see both. I saw her on a TLC tv series called Bad Hair Day. You might be able to catch it on you tube. It’s about medical care for serious hair problems. Good luck! Most don’t realize how stressful this can be.
