Hi, I had a Meningioma tumor removed in 2013 but in December I was told it was back, my Dr said we would check in a years time, I just was wondering if anyone knew how fast it grows

From my personal experience, I agree on not planning to wait until it becomes an emergency. I waited because I didn’t know I had a meningioma until it bled, a stroke. I managed to call 911 before I passed out. I awoke 2 days later in the neuro ICU after emergency surgery. I was extremely lucky.

A small percentage of meningiomas bleed but if they do, the neurosurgeon who consulted with my son about performing the surgery, gave my odds of a meaningful life even with the surgery as 1 in 10. I most likely would die in the neuro ICU after the surgery. Without the surgery I most certainly would die.

Best wishes as you go forward.

@methel: What a story about beating the odds! New information for me as I didn't know meningiomas could bleed. What sympton did you have/what sensation were you feeling that told you that you needed to call 911?

I honestly don’t remember what made me decide to call. Pretty sure it was sudden though. I remember panicking and thinking “What is taking them so long to answer?” And then saying “ I think I’m having a stroke” and that’s it until waking up in the neuro ICU and watching a tear run down my 30-something son’s face, and thinking “ Why is he crying?”

From later reading I learned that meningiomas can bleed for several reasons: the tumor has invaded the wall of an existing blood vessel and weakened it or the new blood vessels the tumor has grown for its blood supply are more fragile and more easily bleed. I never asked why they thought mine bled, but it’s a big deal if it happens.

@doyel I think everyone of use with this condition had the same experience of increasing anxiety as the next MRI gets closer especially the onces in the first year. There are usually still open questions that determine your prognosis- was the entire tumor removed, is something growing again.. it is a tough time. Your emotional state will improve once you pass a successful 1 year MRI. I hope for a good outcome of your scan. Good luck
