Meningioma: Getting ready for radiation, any tips or advice?
My grade 2 meningioma, "Bengio") was surgically removed April of 2023. At my recent MRI, it showed that it is growing back. Since it isn't too big yet, they want to do radiation to stop it's growth. Anyone else experience this? If so, is there any advice or tips you can give me? I will have travel 2 1/2 hours for treatment. Thanks in advance!

I had Gamma knife procedure a year ago but no anesthesia for the mask. They put needles in my skull where the screws go for local deadening and that was the only pain involved. Fortunately it was very short time. The rest went fine.
Went to see the radiologist oncologist yesterday and the plan is to try to do proton radiation to kill any cancer cells. 6 1/2 weeks of 5 days a week. Possible side effects of weight loss headaches , fatigue and maybe other symptoms like pre surgery tumor symptoms like memory loss and confusion. hair loss on that on radiation site. Of course I am dreading it but certainly want to kill cancer cells if possible. Any advise about things I can do to minimize side effects?
So even with the mask you needed it to be screwed on? I thought that wouldn’t happen if you did the mask.
I’m sorry. I meant the frame which you mentioned as a halo device. You are right that the mask does not require screws. My doctor said that the frame gives more precise control of the radiation.
Started radiation March 31st, sooner than I expected. 3 down and only 28
more to go. I'm working with volunteers to help take me the 180 miles round
trip. So far, tiredness is the main side effect. Can't wait for it to be
finished. 80% success rate expected.
Hi,
I am 63 and have a grade 1 meningioma near but not touching my optic nerve. I opted for radiation vs. surgery since i have no symptoms and it was starting to grow. I wanted to nip it with SRS before it grew into symptoms. I have long hair and am concerned about hair loss. I had my last treatment today. I had 5 sessions at Cedars. My temple is the location. Did you los a lot of hair? Hope the radiation worked! I had fractional 5 sessions and after they all rang a bell at the clinic. My friends took me every day and it was close to home. Praying it stays stage 1. Blessings to you all and your journey. Thank you for sharing.
I just finished radiation therapy SRS with a linear accelerator. They pin point the tumor and the surrounding tissue is protected (supposedly), and I trust that is true with all the research I did. I have a stage 1 meningioma and it was growing. I waited 4 years living with the anxiety. I am tired and have a headache but grateful I had the option. SO far I am doing ok. will keep you posted.
I went through the 5-6 weeks of proton therapy and had no side effects except for very slight fatigue the last few days. Never lost any hair or had any facial burns or any effects at all. Only thing I notice is my hair in the front has an area which is a bit curlier than before - a nice little flip. I like it.
I opted for proton therapy after an initial crainiotomy on another meningioma had infected hardware that had to be removed. Am still dealing with that over a year later, so opted for the PT treatment vs another crainiotomy. . Had absolutely no issues with PT treatments. A few days at the end I felt a little fatigued. A little area of hair in front of my head now has a nice curl to it. I like it. The treatment is only a few minutes a day over the 5-6 week period. I filled my days with art and music and friends in between. I trust you will have a positive experience.
CSCmaryann: What symptoms were you experiencing, post craniotomy, that sent you to the doctor and it was ascertained that you had infected hardware?
