Magnesium Glycinate
Does anyone not tolerate it? I’ve tried citrate, L-Threonate, and glycinate. Works well for muscle cramps and spasms as well as poor sleep but extremely hard on my bowels. I know citrate is the worst. I can’t tolerate either form. Any suggestions?

@sueinmn
Both my cardiologist and neurologist have suggested I take magnesium supplements but neither tested me for a deficiency. I think I’ll ask at my next appointment. I have soooo many food restrictions with dysphagia, afib, GERD, allergies and more that it’s not simple for me to get everything through diet but I’ll have to add up how much magnesium I think I’m getting. You provided good info though. Thanks.

1 Reaction@sueinmn good question and I added it to my list of primary care questions. In general I’m not inclined to adding supplements.
But since starting my current low dose at suppertime I've not had a specific ankle muscle twitch that sometimes happened at night. That’s a relief.

1 Reaction@californiazebra & @loll Yes, my cardio and my rheumatologist both suggested the magnesium without testing me. Based on this discussion, I did a lot of reading about correct levels and recommended daily intake, and am now convinced my diet alone provides more than enough magnesium. I am stopping the supplement until my cardio appointment in two weeks, then will ask to be tested. Then we will explore the right dosage if I need it. Since magnesium is the modulator for a number of other nutrients, my concern is that overdosing this one element could knock other things like potassium "out of whack".

2 Reactions@sueinmn with that, I have been getting way more than needed. Years ago, I was prescribed Magnesium L-Threonate 2,000mg 2xs per day for joint pain by an holistic doctor, with no issues. However, after a while, blood tests showed an “abnormal amount”. So I stopped for a while. Since then I have developed severe muscle cramps and neurologist suggested I began taking them again. She didn’t specify the dose but I started taking 2000mg a day. At this point I can’t tolerate them but there were benefits to joint pain and better sleep. Currently, I take Epsom salt baths and use magnesium cream and oil. Needless to say, no more bowel issues.
@cmmichaela I have so many capsules, that method will probably last until they expire. Thank you! I’ll try that.
@starbright375 last week I started Epsom salt baths, spray and cream. Someone in the feed suggested openings capsules for a lesser dose. I have enough of them left to do that until they expire! 😂
@danarosef too much.
@californiazebra no, but is a possibility in the future. Thanks!
@sueinmn I concur.

1 ReactionGreat info. I started taking Magnesium complex with Zinc, 310mg 2x day because I'm having joint & muscle pain from taking injectable statins. I haven't been on Mag. long enough (2 weeks) to notice any difference at this time. Not having side effects mentioned but will pay close attention.
