MAC & dental waterpiks

Posted by cmi @cmi, Nov 10, 2023

Friends,
When I go for my dental cleanings, I do bring my own spring water bottle to rinse & spit. My question is does anyone have reservations on using waterpik at home with caution not to swallow any water? I do not suffer from reflux and I also am maintaining….meaning no cultures and bronchiectasis was unchanged on this years Scan (currently no meds, and mediating with lots of alternative modalities…saltroom therapy, HIIT exercise, breathing exercises, 7% saline & Aerobika, infrared sauna and good diet…weight stable).
Would love to hear your thoughts.

I have stopped using my waterpik. I loved my waterpik. Sometimes I wonder if I bought a new one and only used boiled water in it, if that would be okay, but I’ve just been doing without.

The dental hygienist over time has mentioned a waterpik, but not lately. Between electric toothbrush and daily flossing dentist is happy with my oral hygiene as am I.

Regarding exposure to MAC, I could be wrong but I look at it in terms of viral load. The greater the concentration of exposure to pathogens the more likely you might acquire those pathogens. A swallow of water I'd consider very low exposure, whereas daily hot showers and gardening *might* expose you to greater pathogen loads. There are ways to mitigate exposure while showering (fan off, door open) and gardening (masking, wetting soil). We each need to decide what makes us comfortable.

Fan off? Why? You mean Fan on?

Thank each of you for these responses. I agree with scoop that careful consideration of any consequence…is best. I will be careful & most mindful not to swallow any water….and continue masking if any gardening is attempted, and the few showers I do take, fan on, and very tepid water so to avoid stem👍🏻

Appreciate the feedback from all.

Hi, what is HIIT? Thanks.

HIIT is high intensity interval training….on the Pelaton bike it means you work so hard as to raise to your maximum heart rate (by age) and become breathless (just about) for “seconds” not minutes…in intervals. My workouts involve a total of 15 mins 5x week of HIIT that is 3 sets of 30 seconds, 5 x 20 seconds, 5x 10 seconds…each set has a recover in between set of seconds, 30, 20, 10 respectively. You raise your heart rate to at least 75-85 % of maximum for your age. It has increased my lung capacity and decreased my wheezing. Not easy task but for me worth it.

Thank you for asking the question I had been just wondering about. My hygienist (daughter) just told me to use one. I went for a cleaning and I have 5 cavities. Four are in three of my front teeth on the backside. I will need 3 crowns and 1 filling. The dentist thinks getting that many at once it has to be from the Albuterol because my teeth are always so clean and good. They told me to brush good after using it. Has anyone else had this happen? I did find a couple articles that say it is because it coats the teeth and sits on them.

I do lots of power walking and you are right- the higher intensity exercise does help with keeping lungs strong and clear!

My oral surgeon and dentist both are against water picks and electric toothbrushes because they claim that they push bacteria up under the gums. This is their theory at least. They claim there is no reliable study showing they prevent cavities more than brushing and flossing. Just an opinion. I have some dental implants so I just brush and floss and no problems at all for over 10 years.
