Low Sodium or Sodium Free Bread
Can anyone recommend a good low sodium or sodium free rye bread? Or any low sodium or sodium free bread that actually tastes good? Thanks!

@marsiey Hmm, that is a good question. From what I had seen, bread with less than 140 g of sodium per slice is a good choice. Now, as to flavor, that is your decision. Another thing to watch is what you put on that bread, keeping those choices low sodium, also!!
Have you tried using Google and put in "low sodium bread" for the search, to see what might be available in your area?

2 ReactionsI've been baking sodium free bread for years, most store bought bread isn't that healthy (preservatives and all) and I have celiac disease, so am gluten free. Consider buying a bread maker; they are quite easy to use once you get the hang of them. Salt is not necessary for bread making, and one can add herbs and various flours so the bread has more flavor. Much cheaper than store bought as well.

Do you happen to have a recipe you could share with the group? I have a bread machine, often I use less salt than called for, but would be interested in your recipe experience.
@kayabbott thank you for that input. I just purchased a bread machine so that I can bake healthy, salt free bread for my husband who has late stage kidney disease. If it’s not too much trouble, would you please send me one or two of your recipes. Thank you in advance.
@8801 Because I am GF all my recipes exclude wheat, rye, and barley. If you are eating regular bread, GF is much more tricky to make. Your bread machine should have come with some recipes that are easy to modify (and will have more online). Try a few of those recipes to get familiar whith the texture and rising of bread. Modifications that I make to recipes are to decrease the sugar (some is needed for rising), exclude salt, slightly increase yeast, and change out some (1/4 to 1/3rd) of the flour for things like ground flax meal (high fiber and omega), buckwheat, add pumpkin or other seeds, or chopped nuts. For GF bread I add a tsp or more of psyllium husk (active fiber in Metamucil), but not sure if that would work with wheat bread.

2 ReactionsMy husband has been enjoying Ezekiel bread. It's very low in sodium and has a healthy combination of grains. In our local grocery store, it's in the freezer bread section, but you can order it online as well. Also, Lewis Bakeries have a "health" white bread that is low in sodium, although not nearly as low as the Ezekiel bread. Hope this helps.

2 Reactions@kayabbott Thanks so much for your response. My husband loves bread, but all of the store-bought products are very high in salt. Hopefully the bread machine will enable me to make bread that he can enjoy without harming his kidneys.

I have been doing a lot of checking. Ezekiel brand has a zero sodium and a low sodium bread. So far we have only tried the zero sodium and hope to try the lower sodium version. Aldi's has a low sodium bread that is decent. I will let you know what else I find. It's curious though why low sodium products, particularly bread, are so limited, since there's definitely a market for them.
It may just get to the point I will have to take kayabott's advice and buy a bread machine--then figure out how to make a good low sodium bread. I'll give updates if I find more.

But, no doubt there are more. And if you haven't had the pleasure to smell homemade bread baking, it's really a nice way to fragrance your house! Have that butter ready LOL
