Loss of smell for 2.5 years - started to come back

Posted by loooshy @loooshy, 2 days ago

Hi All
I have a story with loss of smell that may be useful for some of losing it long time and desperate for some hope and try something new

I got covid Nov 2023 for second time, this time i lost smell completely in Dec2023
April 2024, smell started to come back for few minutes then go away again suddenly. I stayed patient as i read for some people it can go up to a year
Then the following months were the same, smell can come back for few minutes usually during the noon to after noon time then disappear

Few many month it will be lost completely all day

Until june 2025, I knew that I have this MTHFR gene mutation which is related to the metabolism of vitamin B12. This vitamin is important to neurons
So started talking methyalated vitamin B supplement but only half the dose
Slowly smell became more frequently
Like it can stay an hour long or few hours

Few months like this and suddenly i get a set back again since DEc2025

April 2026, a doctor prescribed Methylphenidate 5 mg tablet daily
And at same time i doubled dose of methylated Vitamin B

Now since a week I started suddenly to have smell most of the day and even strong sense
Like only first half an hour in morning is not there and while I am sleep. But rest of the day is there

I am not sure what was the real fix
Methylphenidate or
The methylated vitamin B supplement
But I think it is not only The nerve there is also chemical component like your dopamine in cortex and stuff
I really wish everyone luck with this dreading symptoms
Hang in there, it is annoying but i was keepinv myself steady by saying at least I can see and hear and feel
Hang in there everyone and wish all of yoi the best

Glad you found relief friend. I believe my smell/taste/hunger was related to Brain fog and a TBI. My vision/hearing/smell-taste/ and since of enjoyment started to diminish 1 1/2 yrs ago with 10 months of cluster headaches. Began enjoying eating and cooking two days ago. We're all differently designed and coded. I'm happy for you as all life altering events are extremely hard.

Thank you so much for posting this information. I have just started taking PEA Palmitoylethanolamide Luteolin twice daily along with smell training, which I have done in the past, but didn’t work. I’m trying again as I am going on 4 years without my taste or smell. This prescription of Methylphenidate is from a what type of doctor? It’s interesting as I’ve done a ton of research on loss of taste/smell and this never came up. So happy for you that you’ve regained your taste and smell. I am beginning to forget what food tastes like.

@lkirnbauer Sincerely wish you all best of luck
There is definitely hope
This was a normal GP family doctor, i live outside of USA
I complained about loss of smell and he said he tried this as offline label use with a patient and eventually worked
So i was happy to try
It gave me bad headaches and side effects in begining but i said keep tryinh till end
Only at end of 30 days i started to see real difference

My advice do also gene test to see if you have mtfhr gene defect, it attribute to low votamin B and nerve healing may be impaired also

Sense of smell gone since May 2023. Occasionally I'll get a light whif of something but I can't count on either sense of smell or taste to be reliable. I didn't realize these senses are as important as they are for signaling danger as in smoke, or off-odors. No sign of them coming back, not yet.

Thanks for the info. I’ll look into it. I did have B12 deficiency at one time. Also, post covid. My smell has returned since Sept. 2023 and recently my taste disorder has drastically improved. There isn’t much information about why this happens or how to treat it.

@lkirnbauer My I sugest, do it in a comfortable environment. Include soft music in a headphone set. true to get 6-8b hrs sleep each night. a good sleep is paramount to any success as it reduces stress and rgeneratts the brain. It takes time to re-cede the brain to relieve stresses which are not obvious. Find a room which is quiet, and keep away from bright lights. It's amazing the thoudanss of inputs in our field of vision/brain calculates every few seconds when eyes are open. This works for me friend. Have a great nights sleep friend.

@celia16 Congratulations on getting both your taste and smell back! I’ve been without mine since December of 2022, but for a quick 1 time whiff of something. Needless to say, it’s quit a dull existence.

@lkirnbauer Acupuncture helped me get my taste and smell back. It took 3 years to get it fully back. Had some after a year. Was enough to deal with it. I Still did a routine of smelling strong spices, pure horseradish, garlic and several essential oils.

@gnana6 I’ve done acupuncture and had about 30 sessions which didn’t help. Currently doing scent training 2 x’s a day along with taking a new supplement PEA-LUT 700 mg 2 x’s daily.
