Anyone having issues with gaining weight after liver transplant?
Good evening,
I hope everyone is doing well.
My liver transplant was in January 2023 and I have been doing well. The only issue I am having now is, with gaining weight. In 2023 I was loosing weight and could not add any pounds but in 2024 it’s opposite. Anyone having similar problems?
Thank you so much for being here and helping me to stay healthy.
Happy Holidays!!!

I'm glad to hear that your sense of taste has started to improve. How are you doing?
@chuckhorse absolutely i lost 60 lbs and I was at 123 from 185 and it took awhile to gain back weight. I drank very high calorie protein drinks 480 calories ea plus it had the vitamins I needed. After almost 3 years food is tasting better plus everything i liked before wasn’t on my new doctor recommended diet, stay away from all fast foods and restaurants, no sushi or undercooked meat all well done, im back to 185 and staying healthy my surgical scar prevents me from getting fat or it’s very painful, I don’t get hunger pains so i just graze during the day and a very small dinner good luck with your health and recovery it’s gonna be at least a year

My issue isn't about weight gain anymore it's about an inability to lose weight. It's very depressing 😞

Yes. I just told someone else in this chat the same thing.
After being 245 lbs. before liver transplant and rejection 10 months after I was 133 lbs.
Food and I didn’t get along.
It will pass. You will get your tastebuds back in no time. It gets better every day and one step at a time.
Be well and be blessed.

1 ReactionHello,
You are not alone.
I know exactly what you are talking about. My liver Transplant was on September 2020 and had rejection on July 2021. I am not proud saying this but I was 245 pounds before 2020 and by July 2021 I was 133 and happy.
It didn’t last. Now in 2025 I am back to 190. My hepatologist told me that the anti-rejection medications can do that.
Please consult your doctor so you can be informed and at ease.
Good luck. Be blessed
My transplant is 8 weeks ago
And my weight is down 50 lbs. I get around just fine but food is just now starting to taste good. Liver transplant.
Anyone else have this problem
@stephenbrown
Hi Steven. I haven’t experienced muscle cramping but did have serves joint pain in every joint. Not sure if it’s a side effect from the anti rejection meds or from my osteoporosis medication. I also have developed neuropathy quite significantly in my feet and calves. My PCP says there are often unexplainable side effect from anesthesia, especially following a lengthy It didn’t start until about 4 months following my surgery (August 24). I just got rid of my treadmill and am looking into an exercise bike for the days I can’t walk well. Hang in there. I have hope that I will win the battle with my weight gain. Slow and steady. So grateful that I am still here to have these annoyances. Wishing you the best of luck.

3 Reactions@stephenbrown I understand that ! It is such a gift that I almost felt guilty bringing anything up if I did not feel well. I was diagnosed with Alpha 1 that lead to the transplant everything happen so quickly. I did not realize all the our liver does for us until I was sick.

1 Reaction@stephenbrown I am six years out from my liver transplant - I am only taking tacromilis as far as prescriptions related to the transplant.. my Dr has me taking magnesium since the transplant and up until the last year it was part of my blood work. He told me at my last appointment I can reduce the amount - there were times my blood work results showed very low magnesium and during those times I experienced leg cramps th and fatigue. Just thought I would mention it. I would say the first year there were a few hiccups I had gout a few times and had never had that before the transplant. I would say you’re doing really well considering it’s only been six months. Best to you !
