Anyone waiting for liver transplant and diagnosed with liver cancer?

Posted by parrot53 @parrot53, Nov 8, 2022

Good Day All,
I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation. I have cirrhosis with good liver function. I was diagnosed with HCC and the tumor was treated with ablation. It has not recurred, at least not yet. It is my understanding that there is a 70% chance there will be more cancer due to a Cirrhotic liver. I am currently status 7 on the transplant list for a liver as I need to wait the required six months to gain MELD score exception points for the HCC. I feel very fortunate to have this time as this has been going on for the last three years now. However, I am worried about the cancer coming back and also unsure about a transplant if it does not come back. Just wondering if any of you are in or have been in a similar situation and have some encouragement. Thanks for listening.

@tomrennie we both went through the very extensive evaluation process. CT, MRI, ECG, labs, stress echo.

@tomrennie he’s been back twice for more tests so I’m thinking he probably will not be a match either. Thank you for asking. Trying to wait patiently until our next appt👍🏼

@fontanhccmom What preparations are required for both you and your son for the July 23rd transplant? I am unfamiliar with the living liver donor process. Thank you.

@fontanhccmom as your date approaches I hope everything is going well for both of you you. It is so great that there is also a living donor program for liver similar to the kidney. I'll be thinking about you this week.

My son is 24. He had Y90 in January and a bland embolization on a second tumor in April at Mayo Clinic. He is listed for transplant. Luckily I have been approved to be his Living liver donor and surgery is July 23. Y90 completely killed the first tumor. At last CT the second tumor had 1.2 cm residual.

@gigi32, I hope you saw the helpful replies from @craigcraig @parrot53 and @fontanhccmom. How are you and your husband doing?

@fontanhccmom, how are you and your son doing as the transplant day approaches. Will the transplant be done at Mayo Clinic?

@colleenyoung everything was very helpful and reassuring… we are taking it one day at a time and as I’m sure you know so many things can just pop up. Both our sons have now tested for a living donor. 1 was denied and the other is still going through testing. This site has been very helpful and informative thank you all again!

Hello
Not sure if this thread is still going but my husband has cirrohsis, has been alcohol free for 6 months, was denied ablation in November due to where the tumor was located and referred to mayo for treatments and was listed for transplant in February of this year. They did the Y90 procedure in February and in April tumor had shrunk and his tumor marker number went from 625 to 90. August will be when his Meld exception number cancer will be added to his current number which now is 18. Because we did not discover the tumor right away and even though it shrunk I am worried every-time we get checked I worry that a tumor is back or it spread taking us out of transplant. They reassure us it’s a slow growing cancer but it’s still cancer? Just looking for anyone who has a situation like this or have a spouse or someone they are going through with this. Thank you.
