Less than one week post surgery and so hungry
I’d really like to know if you could have protein shakes after surgery? All of my education said yes including the old and new booklets say yes to protein shakes as part of week 1. I had a nutritionist come in my room before I was discharged going over the booklet and she said NO protein shakes till second phase. I’ve only been allowed broth, water, protein water, electrolytes and jello and it’s literally going right through me. I’ve asked my surgery team via portal but no replies. I think she’s incorrect but my husband is scared to have me drink any protein shakes. Anyone else? Thank you.

Welcome to Mayo Connect, many members of this group have gone through same situation you're in. The early post-surgery phases are tough. Beside healing from surgery, you also are being forced into new habits of eating. During phase 1 your stomach is healing. it's crucial to avoid any solid foods or thick liquids during this stage. Most phase 1 diets are clear liquid. Diarrhea can occur during first phase, your body adjusting to a smaller stomach, and potential sensitivities to certain liquids.
I would follow nutrition's directions until told otherwise from your provider. But keep reaching out to your care team for advice.
Are you logging your food intake? It make help your care team give you suggestions if know what your currently consuming and quantity.
Hi there. On the day following surgery, I was started on the Premier Protein shakes in the hospital (Mayo Clinic Health System Mankato). I had to pour the shakes into those little medicine cups. They were strongly encouraged, and I swear I had four bottles of them on my table at once. Check with your bariatric care team (nutritionist). There may be a legitimate reason you aren't supposed to have them, or maybe it was a miscommunication. Best of luck.
