Leg cramps and altitude

Posted by porkyb @porkyb, Aug 11, 2025

I have chronic nocturnal leg cramps. Where I live the elevation is around 2300 ft. When I go to our summer home which is at around 7200 ft. the cramps get a lot worse! The things I do at home (which work) just don't work there.
Has anyone else had the same experiences?

Yes, I find the same thing... I get leg cramps very easily at 7,000 ft and when I go to sea level I rarely have any trouble. Hard to walk them off in the middle of the night. Try to limit alcohol intake and stay hydrated.

This is something that has worked for me: I take a teaspoon of mustard whenever / wherever I have the cramps and they are gone within a minute or so. We are all different, but try it and see if it works for you.

I'm 73 and up until 3 yrs ago, a high end athlete in very good overall health living in Idaho. I was an expert telemark skier/racer, backcountry skier, xc skate skier, avid mountaineer, cyclist, and ..... Three yrs ago after training hard for a xc ski race my legs started to tighten and cramp. I rested for several days but the symptoms worsened. After numerous tests my doctor found I had a severe scoliosis condition that led to the fusion of my L1 to S1 and a laminectomy. I never had a back issue (?) and although now stiff from the surgery, my back is still not a problem. My leg muscle tightness, cramping, pain, and significant discomfort in both legs continues with frequent minor twitching (fasciculations). This occurs 24/7 at various painful intensities and has significantly affected my overall mobility. This occurs if I'm standing, sitting, lying down and when moving about. It affects the muscles from my glutes down to my feet with most tightness in my quads. Walking has gotten very painful with stairs the worse. My left leg is now starting to bow outward and my knees are starting to hurt. Hot tub soaking makes my condition worse and massages are very painful. I have been to various doctors (4 neurologists, 2 spine specialists, pain docs, sports medicine docs, an orthopedic doc, 2 PTs) with numerous MRIs, x-rays, dozens of blood tests, EMGs, vein/artery tests, tried numerous prescription drugs for nerve issues, and I daily take numerous supplements for muscle cramping. Daily morning and night stretching helps a little but only with very temporary relief regarding my symptoms. I still have good strong muscle definition in my legs as there has been no neuropathy or muscle atrophy. My upper body has not been affected at all. I have a red light therapy panel I use on my lower back and I use an inversion table frequently. Anti inflammatory OTC pills help a little with the pain/discomfort but do nothing for the muscle tightness/cramping. Noone has a clue what the source/cause of my condition is and how to treat it.
My symptoms are getting worse. Any thoughts on what direction to take?
