Leaky gut?

Posted by nanceedee @nanceedeefeperi, Jan 26, 2018

Hello, I’m hoping to connect with others who may be able to Help with some answers with what I’m dealing with. I have fibromyalgia and am gluten intolerant. I also have eczema that has spread over different parts of my body. My dr prescribed a steroid to help with the eczema, however I am extremely itchy with a rash on arms
Legs torso. Dr thinks it’s all related but I’m not sure
I have had bouts with heart burn s d constipation/diarrhea. I’ve been reading up about leaky gut syndrome and think I have many of
The symptoms. Any tips as to how I can go about this would be appreciated. I’m in the ER now because of severe fatigue feeling faint s d shallow breathing.

The mention of gluten intolerance and an itchy rash make me suspicious of dermatitis herpetiformis which is the skin manifestation of celiac disease. You may want to look into getting a skin biopsy of the rash to see if this could be the culprit. But be sure that your physician understands how to do the biopsy -- have to follow special guidelines of staining and immunoflourescence.

I have been tested for celiac disease and was negative. I’ve been reading about leaky gut and I have a lot of the symptoms. My GI Dr seems to have knowledge of leaky gut, he took a stool sample and blood work. I’ve been to two Drs, Urgent care and the ER. Stopped eating sugar, gluten free with plenty of fruits/vegetables and purified water.

Hi @nanceedeefeperi,

I'm tagging @clemlaa @ambrose @meemer @mieke @michellecrcrn @uneeq1 @lighthouseceliac, who may have more insights to share about the symptoms you're experiencing.

Since you mentioned you are gluten intolerant, I thought you might wish to view this post in which Dr. Joseph Murray talks about people who may not have celiac disease, and cannot tolerate gluten, but experience symptoms similar to those with celiac disease.

I think often times the assumption is made that anyone who is suffering with inflammation has leaky gut. Often times tests aren't run to necessarily diagnose the problem -- but rather measures are taken to deal with the problem. A good place to start is with a Whole 30 elimination diet with the autoimmune protocol also.

"Leaky gut" seems to be fairly tropical at the moment. I wonder if the attention is warranted.

Hi @davejscott and welcome to Connect!

You're right. Leaky gut syndrome is hotly debated at this time.

@davejscott, is this a condition that you or someone you know is experiencing?

Thank you so much for this info. This has been very helpful! I see this OP is from 2018. Is there newer research or information on this topic? Has the debate been settled whether leaky gut is legitimate for patients who do not have celiac disease?

davejscott, intestinal permeability may be a result of a thiamine deficiency. So asking about "Leaky Gut" may have brought you to learning more about this remarkable vitamin that requires magnesium to become bioactive..

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @eslavik1. Mayo Clinic has done a recent study with significant findings I thought you would like to read this article.

Have you been given an official diagnosis for anything yet, @eslavik1?
