Large amount of blood in urine after lithotripsy/kidney stone removal
I was recently discharged from the hospital. I had a 6mm kidney stone they had to go in and break up and afterwards they put a stent in. I know that passing a bit of blood is normal for this, but I am concerned cause there is a lot. My urine is a bright red and seems to be mostly blood. Should I go back to the hospital? I don't want to waste a trip to the hospital if not because I don't have insurance and I'm already going to be receiving a large bill.

@v14, you're right. It is normal to have blood in your urine (red or blood-tinged urine) for a few days after Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) treatment. But how much is too much? Only your doctor can answer that. Do you have a number at the hospital that you can call to describe the amount of blood you see?
Have you been drinking enough water and fluids?

I just had a 27mm stone removed by Laser lithotripsy and the blood flowed the first day or two but significantly lessened after that. How long since your surgery?

1 ReactionI had a stone removed 2-weeks ago via Lithotripsy with a stent. The stent was removed on schedule and their were no ill side affects. I am, however, still showing blood in my urine after 2-weeks. it is dark (not bright) red, tends to clear but turns red again. Is 2-weeks or longer showing blood in urine considered within the normal recovery window for this procedure?
I’ve had 3 kidney stone removal surgeries in 18 months and I bled after stent removal for 2-3 days
Thank you Sharon - I'm at 2-weeks now. No symptoms but we're doing follow-ups.
Hi Colleen.
Yes on all counts including photos. Had some labs done yesterday and tomorrow its ultrasound, bladder scan and a consult. I also still have soreness in the kidney area. No other symptoms however. I am on Eliquis. I stopped taking it 3 days prior to the procedure and didn't start it again till 4 days after the procedure. I stopped taking it again 1 day ago. Will hold until I consult with urology tomorrow. Maybe that will help.
Glad to hear you’re doing better. January 31 will now be my 4th stone removal, but who’s counting?? 😎
I believe I've finally turned the corner. I've been clear now for 3-days. Lifes little victories!!
This is my second bout with stones. One stone 6 years ago, two this time. I drink so much water now I squish when I walk but I'm resigned to the fact I'll now squish forever.

3 ReactionsVery funny! Glad to hear you’re doing well and obviously have your sense of humor back! Here’s hoping that’s the end of stones for you.
So good to hear. I swear that I slosh too due to drinking so much water. Do you add lemon to your water too?
