Nissen Fundoplication

Posted by Lindabeth421 @lindabeth421, Jul 5, 2011

I am a Mayo Clinic patient (past or current).
Your interests: LAPAROSCOPIC NISSEN FUNDOPLICATION Your experience as a Mayo Clinic patient (if applicable): Today is one week since surgery at the Jacksonville Clinic. It was a positive experience, in that the care was excellent. Now home in Boca Raton, I am 7 hours by car from my doctors. Although I have a local doctor at home, I feel the need to connect with others who have had this surgery. Anything else about yourself: The main symptom I suffered with was chronic cough. I also have been diagnosed with Asthma. Last summer I became a patient at National Jewish Health in Denver, CO, a hospital that specializes in Respiratory disease. I was diagnosed with Bronchiectosis, probably caused by GERD. I had been on the GERD diet, proton pump inhibitors, inhalers, antibiotics, cough meds, the works. Turning over every leaf possible, I was led to the Mayo Clinic. Somewhat cynical about the outcome, I chose to have the surgery. This week has been difficult. I experienced low grade fever, and belching every few seconds for hours on the fifth day out. This has finally stopped and I am now on soft foods, really I'm clinging to blended still. I would like to hear from others that have had this surgery.

Hi I’m going to have the funduplication surgery to fix my hiatal hernia and GERD in THE MORNING!!!. It was never severe but I’ve had issue with asthma due to acid backing up etc. I’m scared to death. I’ve considered backing out. I don’t wanna not be able to swallow and I hear it’s a given. I’m so scared. Please tell me what to expect

@angel213 Has your surgeon done a lot of these..? Is he or she a gastric surgeon? The Nissen failure rate is 1 in 6.. If it fails it is life changing and a full time problem .. each meal is a challenge.. Is Mayo doing it..? If I could have do overs... I would not have it.. ... delay is an opportunity to have a second opinion.. My central Iowa GI doctor painted a rosy picture.. and I believed him... Ken

Hi Ken thanks. Yes he is a surgeon and has done many many. I’ve been assured that things will be great and I’ll be fine but I’ve heard and seen on these forums and testimonials that have seriously made me rethink any of it. I know I can’t deal with dysphasia and I hear that’s a given. I know I can’t deal with the fear of choking etc. I’ve never been so scared in my life

@angel213 Your use of the word "dysphasia" is confusing.. what do you mean.? If you delay, the earlier you tell them the better for them...

Hi Ken. I’m referring to trouble swallowing. I am actually trying to fix my fingers to make the call.

@angel213 I do not have trouble swallowing... I often have trouble with a foam forming in my stomach and that coming up ... usually with something I had recently eaten.. even ice cream if I try taking too much ... 1 dip max.. and eat that slowly.. Things like cabbage, leaf lettuce, and broccoli I don't even try to swallow ... as they will make a return trip upward ...unless you run them through the blender or food processor to chop finely.. Vomiting with gastroparesis is much easier that it used to be before the Nissen.. but it's never pleasant.. K

I appreciate you sharing your experience. As luck or fate would have it, my Dr returned my calls regarding my concerns and decided that I need more testing before we complete this procedure. As of now the surgery is off. I wish you well on your recovery and pray your health be restored to better than ever.
