Nissen Fundoplication

I am a Mayo Clinic patient (past or current).
Your interests: LAPAROSCOPIC NISSEN FUNDOPLICATION Your experience as a Mayo Clinic patient (if applicable): Today is one week since surgery at the Jacksonville Clinic. It was a positive experience, in that the care was excellent. Now home in Boca Raton, I am 7 hours by car from my doctors. Although I have a local doctor at home, I feel the need to connect with others who have had this surgery. Anything else about yourself: The main symptom I suffered with was chronic cough. I also have been diagnosed with Asthma. Last summer I became a patient at National Jewish Health in Denver, CO, a hospital that specializes in Respiratory disease. I was diagnosed with Bronchiectosis, probably caused by GERD. I had been on the GERD diet, proton pump inhibitors, inhalers, antibiotics, cough meds, the works. Turning over every leaf possible, I was led to the Mayo Clinic. Somewhat cynical about the outcome, I chose to have the surgery. This week has been difficult. I experienced low grade fever, and belching every few seconds for hours on the fifth day out. This has finally stopped and I am now on soft foods, really I'm clinging to blended still. I would like to hear from others that have had this surgery.

Hi. I had the Nissen in Oct at Mayo in Rochester. I had been onPPI’s for close to 30 years and my digestive system all messed up. 4/5 ‘s of my stomach was herniated into my diaphragm and i was experiencing lots of painful spasms. I was on a soft diet for 6 weeks and religiously followed that diet after surgery. I drink no carbonation now. I cannot burp and last week had a stomach bug( food poisoning?) i could not vomit but had horrid dry heaves enough to worry I might have messed something up internally. The lack of burping is inconvenient the inability to vomit is worrisome. I take no PPI’s now but still can not eat much or drink much at meals. Funny…. My body has adjusted to this lack of food and I lose no weight. Bummer!!!!! I am greatful I wont have a strangulated stomach so the tradeoff is good. Sure could have used a few more days in the hospital. I spent the night in the hospital and was discharged the next morning. For a 73 year old that was kinda fast I thought. But am thankful for my Doctor and Mayo. I do have utmost faith in them especially my Thoracic surgeon. He was superb! What other questions do u have?

Where in mayo did you go ?I made one call it looks like they’re so busy they’re not even taking a waiting list. I’ll try calling the others but I’m not hopeful so I think I’ll need to find someone in New York. I got one name of a Doctor Who did a successful surgery in New York if anybody else has someone who’s had a successful fundoplication In the New York metro area I would appreciate hearing for me either on this list a ride to me privately.

I initially made the first call in the spring of 2021. I was accepted within a two week span at the Mayo in Rochester. I had surgery scheduled for that summer but became infected with covid and my lungs were greatly affected and compromised. I scheduled a TKR in mpls in May 2022 and had complications so my Nissen was put off until Oct 2022. They stood by me and never dropped me as a patient. I am greatful for that. I really trusted my Doctor from Thoracic Surgery.

Do the puree foods for as long as the doctor tells you. It gets better later on and you can go back to regular food. I made the mistake of trying something that was not puree and got very sick.
