know any causes of Chronic Nausea?

Posted by socalfriend @socalfriend, Sep 26, 2023

I'm really really seeking any type of insight into unusual or rare causes of chronic nausea. I am a 27yo female and have had chronic moderate-severe nausea daily for going on 10 months with no known cause. I have ruled out pregnancy and GERD, and know that it is not from anxiety (I am a MH professional). It is seriously debilitating and I have seen many specialists that all have coincidentally found something but not the cause of the nausea. The other symptoms I have include headaches, palpitations/PVC's, chronic fatigue, occasional nightsweats, dizziness/chest discomfort when standing up, and just an overall sense of unwellness. In the midst of this search for answers I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's, but dont believe it's the cause for many of these symptoms as the lump in my throat feeling and fatigue have improved a little w/ Hashimotos treatment but most of the symptoms I mentioned previously have only continued to get worse. Does anyone know of any possible causes for the symptoms I have been struggling with, particularly the nausea? Or is anyone familiar with Hashimotos and has had a similar experience of having this intense persistent nausea for months?? I feel like my medial providers aren't thinking outside the box and aren't taking it as seriously as I am to consider potential causes. I feel very desperate as I can feel myself getting sicker. This will sound dramatic but since I have only continued to get sicker over the past 10 months its hard not to wonder if I have some type of serious illness thats just going untreated. Thanks in advance.

I had an echo done.... It was strange to me because they said that I was having some unusual rythms/PVC's and could see them during the ekg but on the echo nothing is structurally wrong w/ my heart so just to ignore the PVC's/arrythmias unless I have any faiting. Seems strange to me since they're pretty uncomfortable!

Have you been tested for celiac sprue (celiac disease)? It can cause chronic nausea. Also, gall bladder issues can cause ongoing nausea.

Have you checked in with someone for health anxiety/depression?

Thoughts/worry can make you nauseous.

Stress/anxiety presents itself in many different ways for people.

Have you checked with someone for any possible ongoing sinus inflammation?

It doesn’t always present in ways you would think and can cause vague symptoms of a general unwell feeling

@socalfriend-

You are welcome. Hopefully you can find something out.

Some people think you need to have mucous drainage, stuffiness etc…but sometimes you don’t. It can be odd sensations that start first that can masquerade as other things.

And trust me-I am not a proponent of encouraging someone to go get tons of tests etc…but if you are willing and explain some symptoms to your PCP or a new ENT perhaps they can check.
Low grade chronic inflammation can make someone feel very unwell.

You will likely benefit from finding a good gastroenterologist (as opposed to just seeing a primary care provider).

hi! thank you so much. Unfortunately i have had the opposite, I have gained weight. I'm thinking it's probably because of the hashimotos. I'll definitely check out the link you send. I truly appreciate it! I was diagnosed by an endocrinologist 🙂 Thanks for your help!

I am upset for you. Reminds me of my diagnosis epic.

A couple of ideas for getting help:

1. Check to see if your health insurance company has a nurse consultant program. It should be free, especially since you have a chronic disease diagnosis now. My second nurse was very, very helpful. Our conversations could be tedious-- repeating a lot of doctor stuff, but the results were helpful.
The company is shelling out a lot of money for your care. It is in their interest to get your health issues resolved. So, don't hesitate to access that service.

2. Consider paying out of pocket for a concierge doctor. I haven't done this yet myself, but my friend has. My friend found it very effective. Cost him about $2,500.

3. Double check that all of your records are accessible by all of your doctors.

4. Consider going to a university hospital or a place like Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins.

You are so young (I'm an old gebeezer). I hate to hear about you going through this ordeal.

Best of luck to you. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Have you been tested for Helicobacter Pylori, aka H Pylori. It is an infection of the stomach that you may have gotten in childhood. I grew up with on again-off again stomach pain and nausea until I was finally diagnosed with H Pylori at 38. I ran a course of antibiotics and got relief. It came back 5 years later so I went through another round of antibiotics. That seemed to fixed the nausea problem.
