Knee pain at night

Posted by zacklucy @zacklucy, Oct 28, 2023

Torn meniscus, going to be a while before surgery. In meantime, I am awakened every night in enough pain to prevent sleep. This is getting old. Prescription anti-inflammatories (Meloxicam) zero help. Pillows, raised leg, lowered leg, ibuprofen, naprosyn-nothing.

Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

I sleep with a loose fit compression sleeve and an ice pad in the shape of a small circle that’s cooled in the freezer.

Are you in physical therapy? Heaven - hope you feel better soon.

You are so thoughtful to post your experience. Thank you.

Not in PT yet, trying to experiment with mild exercise, swimming, etc before considering KR. perhaps PT is an intermediate step. Thanks again.

I am in the same situation right now, meniscus torn, arthritis and some cysts. I tried everything I could imagine would help from cold laser, Chinese herbs and lidocaine patches, different painkiller, oils…..
This simple medication combines pain killer and sleep aid does it for me. You might give it a try.
Additional I have a new brace what works great if I don’t walk much.
Good luck and blessings for your upcoming surgery.

I've used KT tape for a long time. Look up "kt tape meniscus lateral" for directions. I have Percoset for nighttime sleep. I have a similar articulated brace, but I like the one that has stretchy material for the back of the knee. My knee is healthy, but I have issues with nerve and tendon pain. I had the testing injections for a "genticular nerve block" and it really helped. I am going for the real thing in a couple of weeks. My pain doctor suggested it after I've had years of doing what you have been doing.

My surgeon told me yesterday, they imply the stem cells into my new joint while surgery.
Less pain, less chance of infection and much better and quicker healing.
He does it since years and patients are very happy with the outcome.

Wow… I wonder if my surgeon has ever done this… will definitely check

@marilyncarkner I have not heard of this either but will definitely check it out if I have another knee replacement. Thanks @rainerhans for sharing this information!

Although not specifically about a total knee replacement, here are a couple of articles on the topic.

This is very interesting....I did have severe arthritis in my knee but my surgeon did not do any stem cell therapy. I wonder if something like this can be done after the fact. At one year I still experience soreness and stiffness and am so tired of this. The knee itself doesn't hurt however all the muscles around it I feel are weak and not regaining strength like I had prior. I do the exercises and stretching and by evening I hurt and am so sore.

I have a bone on bone knee and a replaced knee that's fine but I have nerve pain. I use a seated lateral trainer called a Scoop. Scoop.com and it strengthens the muscles without stressing the joint I walk pain free and my legs feel really strong. It also helped my hip abductors and my back.

My recliner was my best friend. Somehow the placement was just right for my knee and I was able to sleep without pain
