Can anyone tell me the best way to taper off Klonopin? I feel it does nothing for my anxiety

Hi everyone I’m new here too. I have ben taking .5 MG of Klonaopin as part of a “drug cocktail” for about 10 years. I really would like to get off this so I can think clearly again. Does anyone know how slowly I need to taper this? Its such a small dose and only at night. At first I thought I could just stop but now I’m getting worried reading all these comments. I stopped drinking with no issues aside from craving sugar and its been over a year with no issues so I do feel like I’m in a good psychological position to stop? Thank you!!

Google the Ashton Manual. It’s the best taper method out there at this time. In all likelihood your doctor will want to taper you much too quickly. The Ashton method is your best bet. Keep us posted.

I have also been taking .5mg of klonopin at bedtime along with a small dose of trazodone and small doses of lexapro and wellbutrin in the morning. I am 70 and have some underlying conditions. I am worried if I get covid as both trazodone and klonopin are on the list to cut back or temporarily stop taking while on paxlovid. Of course you can't stop suddenly taking these meds so I am considering trying to slowly taper off the trazodone and klonopin. Of course only one at a time. Therefore I will be following this thread. Also has anyone taken either trazodone or klonopin while taking paxlovid?

How is it going? Did you have a successful taper?

I continued taking 3.75 mgs. Valium per day and 5 mgs. Prozac per day when I had Covid in August and took Paxlovid. No adverse reaction. I did have to discontinue my statin drug.

Thanks for the information. I made an appointment with a doctor to talk about a plan of action to follow if I get covid. I had tried talking to a nurse practitioner I usually see but she said I was too worried about covid and that I could just temporarily stop my medicines. I called my psychiatrist and he did not know how paxlovid interacts with my medicines but he said suddenly stopping even a small amount of klonopin could kill me. This is how I found my way to this blog.

No you can’t abruptly stop taking Klonipin. Call your pharmacist. They can tell you everything you need to know about drug interactions. Your NP should not have told you to stop all your meds. Very very bad advice.

I took Klonopin for years, when I moved to NY 2 yrs ago the doctors here were wanting to get me off it, I got tired of that so decided to wean myself off it. I too was taking 0.5mg each morning. I don’t remember exactly how I did it but it was very gradual. By the time I stopped I didn’t really notice any difference. I was also taking Venlafaxine for depression which also helps with anxiety, which may have made it easier.
I hope you are doing well.

Thanks! I think I am off it, 2 days now. I feel fine except falling asleep is a little harder. Thanks for your message!

How are you doing after being off for two days? I’m tapering off 1mg, but doing it very, very slowly. 10% of last dose every two or three weeks using a medical scale. Ugh. Doctor told me to cut 1/4 first week and the anxiety was through the roof after a few days. Researched and found Ashton Manual, plus other warnings of fast withdrawals. I’m doing a very slow cut and taper. Of course, I’ve been on it for many years. It’s infuriating that I never knew how long it could take to get off.

I hope you are off and feeling fine. Yay! Many are not that lucky.
