Son has had 2 kidney transplant, but cannot have another: Why?

Posted by chinniechudd1943 @chinniechudd1943, Feb 20, 2022

My name is Ginnie Stapelfeld. We have a son, who is 52, has had 2 transplants and needs another. He was told by the Hartford, CT transplant team, that he couldn't have another. Something about calcification! He has basically 4 kidneys and they say they can't be removed for another. Why not??? My husband and I don't understand! We need some answers and help.
Thanking you in advance,
Ginnie Stapelfeld

@chinniechudd1943 - Hi Ginnie, Welcome to Mayo Connect. I am a transplant recipient and a mom and I can only try to imagine how upsetting this news is for you to hear about your son's transplant. I had to look up some information about calcification and I learned that Calcification is a gradual accumulation of calcium in an area of your body tissue.

Ginnie, your son's transplant team is going to be your best source of information about his condition. Of course, you will need to rely on your son to relay it to you. If this news about ineligibility for transplant has been recent, he might need need some time for himself to think about it and to accept it. Does that make sense?

@chinniechudd1943 Let me add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect!

Unless you have been given access to your son's health records, by him, you must rely on what he shares with you. That can be frustrating as you navigate the information, right? He may also be having questions that need answers.

As @rosemarya said, his transplant team will have the best information. Calcification can occur in the cardiac area, or around the kidneys. It seems to me that your son is rightfully due the full information of where the calcification may be, and reasons for not removing non-functioning kidneys. If there are additional health concerns, they could part-and-parcel of the bigger picture of what he is dealing with.

I hope you are able to support your son, and be an ally to get the complete answers it sounds like you all need to help him in his decision making. Are the doctors talking about dialysis, yet?

Hello Ginny, your son could always seek a 2nd opinion at another transplant center such as Mayo. Hope he gets the answers he needs!

Thank you so much for your input. It makes so much sense to me, but don't know about him. He's a very private person, doesn't talk much (except to close friends) and I do know that this news from last week has taken us all back. We were so sure the CT scan would show room for another kidney. Thanks again for you input. So very kind of you! Hope your transplant will last a lifetime!
