Posted by wrmeador @wrmeador, Feb 13 3:09pm

I am a 78 yo male. My pulmonarist said it is very specious because it has grown i n size to 1.5 cm.
I will go to Charleston va hospital soon.
He said a biopsby is not require because it is spiculaüted and grown in 1 year.
I will have a pet scan and then minimum invasive surgery to remove it. Chemo is not
off the tabled. i alsohave DVTs in my right leg, which im taking Eliquist. [second time in 12yrs when i had leukemia. ]
In 1966 i was in the Army basic training, while there i came down with pneumonia and coughing up blood. Since then xrays awayed showed a scar. I read that a lung scar can turn maglignant. sorry for ms.

I will have to re-do a MRI because i could not tolerate the pain in my neck and back from herniated discs. Any suggestion for a sedative or other meds?

Was prescribed Lorazepam
an hour before the MRI and another one 1/2 an hour before. Worked like magic.

Hi @wrmeador , I'm sorry to hear that you are dealing with this issue. Hopefully they'll have more answers for you soon. The biopsy is critical in determining the makeup of the tumor. Did they tell you if the biopsy is a bronchoscopy where they go down your throat to access the lung, or a true needle biopsy where they go through the lung? Either way, the procedure is usually well tolerated. Wishing you the best on Monday!
Take one day at a time, the tumor pathology should drive the type of treatment. There are many types of chemo treatments now, and many more medications to combat side-effects. It may be nothing like what you experienced 14 years ago. But be sure to relay any concerns to your team once they have a plan in place. Keep us posted.

I had a PET scan at the Charleston, SC VA hospital this week and part of the report mentions this :
"There is a hypermetabolic right upper lobe lung nodule
(1.9 x 2.3 cm, max SUV 14.1). There is no pleural effusion or
pneumothorax. There is hypermetabolic lymphadenopathy in the
right axillary (max SUV 3.2), right paratracheal (max SUV 8.6),
right hilar (max SUV 4.1), left hilar (max SUV 3.3) and
subcarinal (max SUV 4.2) regions."
Can someone who has technical knowledge deceiver this ?

@wrmeador , I am glad to read your other post, and that your doctors are moving forward with a biopsy. That will help to know exactly what you're up against. As your doctor likely explained by now, the PET results show several areas of concern. But many things can cause a nodule or lymph node to have 'SUV' on a PET scan; inflammation, fungus, cancer. Please keep us updated.

They went down my throat and took samples. That was Monday and have not heard anything yet.

Hi wrmeador. I wish you the best. I'll pray for you if you'd like. I've had two cancers since 2021. One was advanced Prostate Cancer and the second one was diagnosed while I was still being treated for the first one. The second one was Urothelial Cancer. Radiation and hormone therapy for 2 years for the prostate cancer and chemotherapy for the second one. I did lose my left kidney to the second cancer. Now they just found a 1cm Spiculated node in my upper right lung lobe with three other nodes 4 to 5 mm and many more in the left upper lobe and elsewhere. I see my Oncologist this afternoon. I do hope you come out on top of this. God bless you.

Well, things have changed after having biopsy of the nodes, it has spread to a lympth node near the center of my chest and its classified as stage 3. Not sure of the sub class. My doctor now says chemo, immunotherapy, then surgery to remove the upper right lobe.
I will start chemo Apr. 1. I've had cemo in 2011 for leukemia and i had all of the bad side effects then.
This time my anxiet med Lorazepam may help.

Depending on the type of chemo many tolerate the routine lung cancer chemo i.e. Carboplatin and Pemerexted very well with minimal and short term side effects. If that doesn’t do it or it recurs later there are a few very effective targeted therapies (pills) that can work miracles with long term effective management. I had 3a in left upper lobe. Surgery then chemo. I had a reoccurrence after 2 years. Then went to targeted therapy and 5 years now just continuing to monitor.

Thanks for replying.
Correction, I start chemo review on Apr 2 and chemo with Carboplatin on Apr 3.
Did you have mouth fungus with Carboplatin? I really dread it. When I had Leukemia I had the worst time swallowing pills or eating.
I literally did not eat anything substantial except milk shakes and ice cream for 5 weeks.
Where you able to eat regularly?

Hi guyjeff123,
I hope your Oncology appointment was uneventful with no more bad news.
My spiculated node will be treated with Carboplatin, which I read is not that bad for side effects. I'll find out after Apr 3, I will have that for chemo.
Wish you the best of care, keep positive.
