Journaling - The Write Stuff For You?

Posted by Ginger, Volunteer Mentor @gingerw, Jun 19, 2020

Long ago –okay, for me, it was long ago!- it was common for a young person to keep a diary, a place to write down the heartaches and giggles of growing up, the trials and tribulations of school, friendships, sports and activities. Sometimes it was a locked book, so that we felt secure knowing our secret thought remained a secret.

How times have changed! While I no longer keep a classic diary, it is no less important for me to write down thoughts, ideas, and heaven-knows-what, on a regular basis. Nowadays, the common name is a “journal”, and seems to appeal to every segment of society. There are an abundance of ways to do this, and so many reasons why. Although I prefer longhand, many people use a computer, and there are any number of prompts/styles/methods.

Let’s explore this together!

Do you journal? What prompted you to start? What would you tell someone who wants to start?

Hello to all

Another weekend comes to.a close and I am still doing an audio journal of my anxiety and now ready for another week…my feet and ankles are swollen, puffy, my right hip still very sore and my thoughts are kind of down… this morning in an AA zoom meeting I was able to help some lady feel better by reminding her that in spite of her trials and worry that she was doing ok by not picking up a drink or drug…that lifted me for awhile..but tonight kind of just plain down…and alone..I know and pray that this too shall pass…my wife has some medical problems that need to be addressed on May 7…thank God for her..like the nice member said in a reply last week that “as long as I am in touch with God and Mayo Connect, I am never alone”…I must remember that…and my short prayer to God is “please God help me, take away my fear and anxiety and grant me peace in my day “…may all that come here have a peaceful safe week

Hello to all

Another work week comes to an end..a week full of morning anxiety and a collision 💥 with another auto…the young man rear ended me while I waited for the light to chance…he did not want me to call the police, he was extremely frightened..he said the car was illegal…I took his info on my voice recorder and he drove off… reported to police ..the officer practically dismissed it as a fender bender which is what it was …but my point I was trying to make was that he had said the car was illegal.. I reported it to USAA and they issued a payment to a repair service company…I will take the car in Tuesday…living in this world today is getting very crowded and extremely tense 😬 to all that come here, have a peaceful ☺️ weekend 🙏pvctom

@pvctom2021 This could surely be a journaling prompt! I am glad you are okay after that disturbing event.

@gingerw

Thanks Ginger for your nice reply.. I am ok, but wonder 💭 how many illegal cars 🚗 are out there…Yates says in his poem “the second coming” that “things fall apart, the center can not hold’…
Sometimes that comes close to today…”and what rough beast, it’s hour come round at last slouches toward Bethlehem to be born”.

Hello to all

My orthopedic surgeon doctor follow up slightly over a year since the THR on left side and a month since my fall is finally around the corner, Wednesday to be exact…I hope this discomfort in my right hip area around the Bursa and lower right back pelvic area prove not too serious…the weekend flew by like a meteor… my wife has some heart and dermatology appointments on the 7th of May.. I hope and pray that all goes well…if so, we have a chance to go with a wonderful travel agent out of Fredericksburg Va with a group of seniors to her home land of Ireland…the itinerary looks wonderful, we would even stay in a Castle 🏰 one night…it would be a make up for our cancelled 😡 trip there back in June of 20’ when everything shut down…always wanted to go there…my grandmother 👵 on my Dad’s side came over from Ireland on the Lusitania….what a long wonderful life she lived.. I am ready to go just about anywhere these days and the nice ladies at the travel agency mentioned a five night cruise out of Baltimore to Bermuda in July…that’s very tempting..always wanted to go there too…wish all that come here a safe and peaceful ☺️ week. 🙏 pvctom

@pvctom2021 Today is your appointment, and I hope it has gone well? Did you journal about what you might expect to hear, and how you might react to everything? Also, journaling about the possibility of an upcoming trip would be fantastic! You have gotten some great trip ideas from those ladies at the travel agency, and I hope you can take advantage of them.

Hello to all
Thank you Ginger for your support and encouragement to journal…my orthopedic surgeon appointment went well…I was surprised frankly..he looked at the X-rays and said my left knee was intact and there was a large space of cartilage…my left hip replacement was fine, the right hip to my amazement was fine…I guess the bursitis I am feeling (at the moment) is a ‘wait it out for now’, his reply also was I bet it will trend better….so I was given the gift 🎁 of some sprinkles of good luck….🍀👍 Ireland is a nice trip, and is one trip that my wife wants to take…the whole itinerary sounds very exciting and wonderful…my hat is off to you and all here for what you have had to endure…your courage and others that I have read about here are just amazing and inspiring to me…an Ephesians nurse practitioner who worked practically charity free once told me ‘that I was in need of some emotional muscle’…wish all who come here a peaceful ☺️ healthy day and night..🙏

Hello to all

This ends another word day week and I fond the mall walk and a visit to the Guitar Center a nice little start to the weekend..
I traded a guitar back to them for a different one, and now my wait for the UPS tracking to refresh…my Orthopedic surgeon gave me a clean bill on my hip replacement since my fall on 1 March.. My lower back, pelvis area and right bursa still ache like a bad dream…My labs were okay, urinalysis tests appeared normal…. I just am grateful for this journal thread and this wonderful Mayo Connect… I listen to people from all over and I realize what roads they have to trudge to stay alive and so admire the courage…it takes….. I still get the
morning dread, I can’t figure that out…but when I get moving , that mood swing lifts and I can get going…and I am so glad for the mentors that have helped me with supportive reactions and comments…may all who come here, have a good peaceful
weekend 🙏pvctom
