Jak2 positive, biopsy next: Does it mean I have blood cancer?
Hi, I've been told I'm jak2 positive. I'm due to have a bone marrow biopsy in a day or two. My question is, if it comes back normal does it still mean I have some kind of blood cancer?

I am 68 and have had 3 TIAs. I just received my lab work results that say that my JAK2 V617F is positive. Is the next step the biopsy? Or will they retake the lab work?
I am 68 and have had 3 TIA, most recent one on January 13, 2026. My lab work showed that my JAK2 V617F is positive. Is the next step: biopsy or will they re-do the lab work, before requesting the biopsy?
That's a question for your doctor. You don't necessarily have to have a biopsy. You might want to concentrate on a way to get your blood components adjusted into the normal level first.

2 ReactionsOn your blood chemistry report are your platelets elevated, have they been rising over a few years? My platelets kept rising and finally I had a bone marrow biopsy which diagnosed MPN-essential thrombocythemia with Jak2 mutation. It is a chronic cancer which can be controlled with medication

3 ReactionsI have ET with JAK2. My doc told it me means its a gene mutation...but not inherited or that you cannot pass it on to your children (if you have any). That is the reason for the ET diagnosis. I didn't not have a biopsy since it would just confirm the JAK2.

2 Reactionsessential thrombocythemia (ET) can sometimes be diagnosed without a bone marrow biopsy if a driver mutation like JAK2 is present, along with other clinical features. However, a bone marrow biopsy is typically recommended for a conclusive diagnosis, especially to rule out other conditions. My father had elevated platelets, but long ago they didn't know about ET and how to control it. I believe he had ET, as doctors didn't know why he had elevated platelets back then. There is also a connection with ET Jak2 and endometrial cancer, check for research on Google Scholar

4 ReactionsCan anyone speak about the connections between a confirmed JAK 2 ET and other cancers beside endometrial??
Thank you, Bev Battle
I've checked with AI ChatGBT...it gave a lot of info.
Here is some of it...
Why people online get confused
On the Mayo Clinic Connect page you’re reading, someone casually mentioned a “connection” and suggested Googling it .
But that comment is not based on clinical evidence — it’s just a misunderstanding because the same gene name appears in two very different medical situations.
Hematologists and oncologists do not consider ET a risk factor for endometrial cancer.
Bottom line for you
Your ET with JAK2 V617F:
affects your blood and clotting system,
does not increase your risk of endometrial cancer,
and does not mean the two diagnoses are biologically linked.

5 Reactions@1995victoria I have a similar history but have been diagnosed with myelofibrosis. I will be undergoing a bone marrow / stem cell transplant which is the only cure in my case. Good luck with controlling the disease.
