Is Zytiga 250mg 4daily+1prednisone prostate cancer
I’m being treated by oral 4 250mg + 1 5mg prednisone daily all in 1 dose for stage 4 prostate cancer. Although it has achieved a desired PSA it appears by my research that this regimen significantly reduced my life span + I also have 4 lung cancer since 2016 but Optivo put in remission in 2018-there is more but I’d like to start there

@chebo1954, welcome. I moved your question about Zytiga to the Prostate Cancer support group where you will find many people talking about Zytiga (abiraterone acetate). See all related discussions here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=Zytiga%20
Abiraterone is used in combination with prednisone to treat patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (prostate cancer that is resistant to medical or surgical treatments that lower testosterone and has already spread to other parts of the body) and metastatic high-risk castration-sensitive prostate cancer. https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/abiraterone-oral-route/description/drg-20074889
@chebo1954, what information leads you to believe that this treatment may reduce your life span? How are you feeling?
I don’t feel that bad but Zytiga is known to adversely affect the kidneys and I am already at stage 3b kidney failure, plus it is also known to cause Afib which I am also presently being treated for plus the same dr that prescribed Zytiga also has me on levothyroxine which is towards the top of the list of medications that should not be used while taking Zytiga
I was on Zytiga For 2 1/2 years. For some people, it can be quite difficult. It gave me high blood pressure for which I now have to take three pills twice a day, it gave me four afib Events (had not had one for 17 years), The third one putting me in the hospital for four days. I have been on Darolutamide For two years and it has worked much better without any side effects and kept me undetectable.
Talk to your doctor about your kidney issues and afib danger ask him if you can get on a different drug. The only other choice is one of the lutamides.
I am on a blood thinner because of afib. Prevented me from having a stroke when I was in continuous afib for 3 1/2 straight days. Not sure if you are on one, but it might make sense to ask your doctor if you stay on Zytiga.
The problem may be that all of the drugs have at least some effect on the kidneys. Darolutamide Has the least side effects of the lutamides, So it’s a good choice. I know a lot of people on it that are quite elderly and it’s working great for them. Many of them have dropped ADT and are just on Darolutamide. Apalutamide doesn’t appear to affect the kidneys much either. Enzalutamide seems to have a slightly greater risk.
For Any lutamides
While some patients may experience mild, non-significant changes in kidney function tests, those with pre-existing kidney disease may require closer monitoring or dose adjustments.
Thank you for the heads up and do take Eliquis 5mg, am/pm bid dose for a blood thinner. Thank you again!
For us, that standard dosage of Zytiga and prednisone have been a godsend, with no bad side effects. My husband is Stage 4 and castrate resistant and was on Zytiga plus prednisone, which kept his cancer suppressed for over three years. It has definitely extended his life span, not shortened it. His kidney function is routinely monitored and has stayed within normal levels, and he had had no cardiac issues or blood pressure spikes. Everyone is different, of course, but please don't discontinue Zytiga prematurely.
My Husband is stage 4 Gleason 4+5. He has taken Zytiga 100 mg + prednisone and gets a Lupron depot shot every three months. He will be finishing the regime in January after 2 years which started following radiation. He has swollen ankles, but outside of night urination he does not complain of side effects. We don’t know what will happen when he stops the treatment in January, but our advice would be to make sure you have good urologist and oncologist and listen to them! We will keep you in our prayers!
I did not join this online group to be combative but do your think that maybe just maybe that my intake of Zytiga dosage is a somewhat higher dosage than your husband and it affects my kidneys which are already impaired (stage 3b kidney failure) plus constant episodes of Afib which all in all scare the crap out of me as any of those episodes can easily cause a heart attack or stroke or both, but I do appreciate your input and will keep your husband in my prayers.
My husband takes 4 tablets of Zytiga a day each tab is 250 mg so 1000 mg a day. I was just sharing that outside of swollen ankles he has had no problem and certainly no Afib. Every person reacts to these drugs differently. We have been lucky that Doug has not done poorly on the drugs. So sorry for your suffering.
I think she meant 1000 mg a day, not 100. The Zytiga tablets only come in 250mg as far as I know.
Get your hubby on a low fat diet breakfast and take only one Arbiterone with it daily. 250 mg. Was fine for me and kept PSA < .01 for two years/ recommended per my MO.
