Is there a supplement that really works?

Posted by debbik @debbik, Nov 14, 2024

I was diagnosed 6 years ago with osteoporosis. I thought I was doing everything possible to build bone density but my latest bone density showed it got worse by 6%. I am taking a supplement called ‘bone-up’ which is supposed to be natural and has StimuCal. I’m wondering if there are better supplements out there that really help? Has anyone seen positive bone density results? If so, I would love to know what you are taking and doing. By the way, I’m 65, and try to be fairly active. Thank you.

I don't mean to belittle this, but... homeopathic remedy? No. Homeopathy is quack science with no scientific basis whatsoever. There is only one group of people promoting homeopathy: the people that sell it.

Apart from that, you're taking calcium and magnesium like everyone else. This regimen isn't doing anything for you that a simple multivitamin doesn't do, and it is not going to fix your osteoporosis.

well homeopathic existed long before our current processes. And I've had 3 dexascans and have gone from osteoporosis to osteopenia. So say what you will but I'm pretty happy with my results and plan to start the strength resistance training curriculum. Also have come across a pretty well-renowned DO Neurosurgeon and he is having much success - and has now devoted his career to osteoporosis since it is a world-wide issue.

Good luck.

I don't see what almond milk does, unless it was calcium-fortified, in which case it doesn't have to be almond milk. Personally, I prefer regular milk, since a fortified drink is no different than taking a calcium supplement.

Good point. Thanks. I prefer Almond Milk, but I do eat cottage cheese (Good Culture brand - a step above anything else commercially available). Maybe I'll experiment with drinking 1 cup of regular milk in place of 1 cup of Almond Milk.

What are your recent dexa scores?

Jump to this post

L-Spine T-Score -2.3

Left Hip Femoral Neck Bone Mineral Density T-Score -2.5
Left Hip Femoral Neck Total Bone Mineral Density T-Score -1.9

(I'm not sure about the difference between the Left Hip stats. Maybe the second one is mislabeled?)

Im skeptical about these Dexa scans.
My left hip femoral neck T score is -1.6
My total left hip is -2.2
But these values are being compared to a 30 year old, it says. Im 72!
Does anyone understand why my doctor wants me to take Fosamax? I want to try supplements instead along with weight bearing exercises. Not sure what supplements would be the best.

I wonder if it is because the bones of a 30 year old are at the peak of their functioning and structure? I imagine that compared to someone that is 72 and hada dexa that would tell them alot about our deterioration from an arbitrary "norm" what has your doc told you about his decision making. It is not unusual for physicians to start with fosamax. It is also cheaper and the insurance companies love that. I'd want to have her go over in depth why this drug now? What is it's function? Why not a bone builder like tymlos, forteo or evenity? What is it about my particular history that leads you in this direction? What is the long term drug sequence and why. Then you can evaluate after doing your own research.

To me (not a doctor, but a scientist by education), I would question the Fosamax.

My doc wants me to consider a pharmaceutical too, but I am resistant. Instead, I am striving to add more weight bearing exercise (check out Will Harlow on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSQqRDVdF-A), as well as just more exercise.

As for supplements, I have yet to find a Bone/Osteo supplement that combines what I want, so I use:
2 Calcium / Magnesium Citrate combo (Pure Encapsulations). This is a fairly low dose, but absorbable forms.
0-1-2 additional Calcium Citrate (Solaray or Pure Encapsulations). Depends on how much calcium was in my diet that day.
1 vitamin D3/K2 combo supplement (Zahler). Occasionally, I switch off to just Carlson's chewable D3.
1 sustained released B12 (Bronson).
I also take a multi most days (Centrum women 50+).

In about 9 months I'll retake the DEXA and see if this regime helped.

As I've noted elsewhere, a friend (80+ years old) was told by her doctor to drink 2 glasses of Almond Milk (which is fortified with calcium carbonate) a day. Her density improved - moving her from osteoporosis to osteopenia.

I'm sure there is no magic bullet, and trial and error is necessary. Keep in mind that while we are all human, each of our bodies are a little different. 🙂

Good luck!

In 12014 I went onto the Forteo program for 20 months. It took me out of the Osteoporosis classification into bottom line normal. Then I took Algae Cal for years .It worked to a small degree in building my bones. Gradually, I have been going down into the Osteopenia classification. Don't remember numbers. Had to quit taking it due to the magnesium in it. My system did not tolerate it. I found another supplement with almost the same ingredients in it without the magnesium. I have tried eating magnesium with the greens and taking different magnesium's supplements however, I am not improving. I will be 85 years old in a few days. I tried to stay active with weight bearing exercises, walking and my diet, take a lot of diffrent supplements.
