Is it possible to stay off bone drugs altogether
Wondering if it is possible to stay off bone drugs altogether by taking bone supplements, working out with weights, walking and a bone healthy diet?

Is anyone still taking calcium supplements. Or is it just too difficult to make a difference at age 83.

1 ReactionI used algaeCal for 3 years with no improvement. But since i have consistently done weight training 8 to 10 # hand weights my Dexa scores have improved slightly. Which i consider a win. Doctors really do push the bone drugs, so i did get a Reclast infusion one year ago. Aching and joint pain in my feet, hands and writs has gotten worse in the last year. I am hesitating on my Reclast infusion scheduled for next week. Should I or shouldn’t I? The pain can really take me down.

1 ReactionCan you see an endocrinologist? That would be the right person to advise you. A general practitioner is not usually the best person to treat osteoporosis.

3 ReactionsI have had one appointment with an endocrinologist. She suggested I go on drugs based on my last DEXA scan. She ordered a new one for me and the results are worse than the previous one. I see her again at the end of August and I know she will want me on the drugs. I am going to tell her I don't want them. I would rather she work with me to get my bone markers where they should be.

2 ReactionsCongrats on your DEXA score increasing, thats something. I'm sorry that you are going through pain with the Reclast. I am on the Reclast Facebook Group page and have read similar stories.
Were you using AlgaeCal or AlgaeCal Plus? Also, how many days a week do you work out?
I'm 71 and I still take calcium supplements. But I also take vitamin D and vitamin K. The vitamin K2 as it keeps the calcium out of the arteries.

2 ReactionsSandra, I’m in exactly the same boat. One low osteoporosis (one hip) and one low osteopenia (spine).
My doc wants me to take Alendronate (Fasomax). I’d love to know if I can address my situation without that drug!

3 ReactionsIt is a bone drug.
I used AlgaeCal Plus which was expensive. I work out 5 to 6 times a week. I’ll join the Facebook group for more info.
