Is HoLep recovery worth the procedure?
I had Holep with a Dr. in Boise-Urologist Austen Slade. Today makes 10 days post surgery. I’m 51 in general good health, no allergies or underlying issues. My BPH was at its max , complete blockage. Prostate and Median Lobe. I could not no. 1 and a catheter was being recommended indefinitely. A cystoscope exam with my surgeon showed I was one of few patients with this condition that can be treated with possibly preserving all / most sexual functions. That being said. Here is my experience ( so far)
My outcome doesn’t represent all outcomes as different patients have different experiences and health risks. Post procedure, my catheter was removed in less than 14 hours, with the ability to use the restroom after a supervised test run by 5 am the next morning.
Since I showed no signs of distress, coherent, no fever , or pain (slight discomfort ,yes) it started off really good. After several drs discussed my progress I was released.
Follow up calls were daily for a few days.
Day 2-4 surprisingly , urine remained clear. Also most bathroom trips , occasional light blood and a sting that subsides quickly especially with ibuprofen.
Today is day 5 , some blood today in the evening , dismal sting , but zero pain since after surgery. Completely mobile.
Day 10 only thing left is a numb feeling in the area treated. My bathroom health is 100 percent restored. If there’s any irrepressible symptoms or damage. It’s too soon to know.
It appears to function but I’m avoiding any excitement for 4 weeks.
As of now, Not straining or lifting anything heavy. Drinking loads of Water for first week to keep flushing. Resting is also important.
Wishing you all future patients a speedy recovery and may your pathology test be negative as well.

Oh and was not allowed to lift weights for a month. Same for No long walks , but no sitting still long either. No dog walking ( pulling) I can eat anything but some food/drinks can irritate your bladder and inflame your already sensitive urethra.
Could someone point me to a comment where someone manage the pain (burning sensation urinating) after HOLEP? It´s said that acetaminophen relieves pain, but not burning sensation. As for Pyridium, I´m finding several comments showing that it can cause liver and kidney damage, the same as Cystex. So, how can someone manage adequately burning sensation when urinating after HOLEP?
For me , ibuprofen for two weeks. Then personally I chose to deal with what days I felt a light burn when I go pee
What was your daily dose of Ibuprofen, and how much times a day? Thank you
Oh, I started on over-the-counter which is like way less than 600mg and that’s why It didn’t really work but something was better than nothing. When I flew back home because I went out of state for this, I was not gonna get TURP and suffer for six months. I had my stash of 600mg ibuprofen here that was given to me by the hospital when my BPH kept sending me to the emergency room.
Whatever pain reliever you’re allowed just take it on and off don’t have it in your system. 24 hours a day if you can help it and always always make sure your doctor knows what you’re taking.
66 days
Almost completely recovered.
No issues to report.
Gym routine back to normal.
No urinary issues ,whatsoever.
None of the common side effects from procedure
So far it’s like I wasn’t sick.
My Dr gets the credit.
Day 75
Before I give my latest update, I’m aware than a high percentage of men have had everything from hiccups to regrets about their procedure, due to individual outcomes. I pray for all of you to recover and fast. Just stating my own personal experience so far.
I haven’t experienced a single issue to date( knock wood). I did have numbness, stinging, and a little blood with soreness the first week.
Currently I’m back to normal bathroom breaks. I get up once a night ( and only if I drink liquids right before bed) a few days a week.
I do get sudden urges but no accidents ( as of yet, KNOCK WOOD)
No Impotence or RE.
I can now travel out on long days again.
Sounds like Holep was very effective for you. My Rezum ultimately did nothing for me and I am considering Holep.
I saw Dr Austen Slade in Boise Idaho. Look for his YouTube video on HOLEP. It is the simplest explanation you’ll find on the Internet anywhere in the world. Last but not least he’s the only one in our country currently that does the specific HOLEP‘s like the one that I had done which is neck preserving
Like all responsible doctors he recommended I remove it all, but I’m still only 51 and I did not want to experience retrograde ejaculation this early in my life His advanced training and extra studies in this field, make him also the only fellowship certified surgeon in his region
I can’t say enough about him
I wish you the best of luck please stay in touch
Day 90
All quiet on the western front. Full recovery.
