Is anyone else talking Wegovy for heart disease?

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Jun 30, 2024

The FDA recently approved Wegovy for heart disease. My medicare Advance Plan now covers it at $99 a month so I started on it this week. I cannot take any statins, I couldn’t even take red yeast rice. I was on Repatha which brought my numbers down, but it has the nasty side effect of maybe making you diabetic which worried me greatly. Repatha brought my numbers down so now that i have switched to Wegovy I’m wondering if Wegovy will maintain those lower numbers for me. I do like the Wegovy side effect of weight loss. I LOVE how my brain is thinking about food now.

I did not know that about Repatha. What are you now taking for Cholesterol?

Thank you for sharing. I can't seem to get my Medicare Plan (Humana) to cover it at all.

I can’t get my Doctor to prescribe it.

I sent my doctor the study showing it was for heart disease. But, I was only able to take it for three months because I hit the Medicare “donut hole” where the out of pocket cost skyrocketed.

Although I'm overweight, it was the positive effects on heart disease and death that attracted me (I have heart disease). First shot yesterday. Mild nausea today. Saved half of breakfast to eat later. Am concerned about nausea, although I knew it was a side effect. Would like tips on combating it.

For me the nausea never went away and I declared to a friend that the reason you lose weight on it is because of the nausea. I also had stomach pain. I could start again since it is a new year insurance wise but decided not to because of the nausea. I hope your nausea goes away.

I have been doing the shot since June at my own expense because my Cardiologist recommended it due to the fact I cannot exercise very much because of SCAD, FMD and Vasile Spasms. I also take Repatha for hereditary high Chlorestoral. I have lost 40 pounds since I started and survived my 5th heart attack/ SCAD event. So it is not stopping them, but at least I am surviving them so far. I would highly recommend these drugs, if you are in a similar situation. Best of luck!

I'm taking it for heart disease and obesity. Grateful for research scientists who convinced Medicare to cover it. Also taking repatha. Also have lipoprotein (a) in the 400 range. Doing what I can. So far I have outlived my father by 2 decades and my grandfathers by 3 decades. Puts a whole new light on family history and makes me very grateful for medical science and my wonderful Cardiologist.

I'm also on it as prescribed by my cardiologist. They were very supportive of using it to promote heart health when I asked about it. My main motivation in taking it is the 20% reduction in significant cardiac events in the research study that got it FDA approval for heart health. But the weight loss is a nice feature! I'm only 3 months in, but I've lost about 9% of my body weight. I feel much better than I did before and am loving returning to jogging and other activities that I had stopped doing after I gained weight. While I do sometimes feel pretty queasy on it, the benefits (and especially the reduced risk of heart attack) far outweigh those side effects for me.

This year there supposedly is no donut hole, just max out of pocket of $2000. You could try again?

Thank you but $2,000 is over my head, too.
