Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

@kirchercl- Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. As you can see you are not alone in this finding after the covid-19 vaccine. What led you to have your blood tested? I was very tired but never thought to have mine checked.
Prior to the covid vaccine had you a history of low iron or any pre-existing conditions?

Perhaps this can help understand more fully about iron deficiency after a covid vaccine.

Routine blood test due to meds. I have high blood pressure and cholesterol being treated. All CBCs I believe have been normal before this. Not sure if iron was checked before. Only checked after the first abnormal test. Never told I had iron deficiency before.

I attributed my fatigue to changes in eating and sleep pattern. But different diet was mostly meat. And only after some hematologist test did I think about the vaccine. In some ways I don’t want it to be the vaccine. I have been an advocate and have a sister that believes differently. LOL

I had a negative test for covid once a year ago. I only had a cough. Allergies suspected.

Like I posted I now have a prescription for iron. And plan on eating better and make sure I have Vitamin C. See Dr in 4 weeks again to see what he thinks. Will definitely bring this finding up to him.

@kirchercl- I know what you mean, there seems to be one in every family, at least! Are you tired now?

I have had early appointments this week and always seem to feel better when I get up earlier but end of day I am falling asleep on the couch. I just started the iron 2 days ago. Not sure how soon it will make a difference. Will keep you updated. 🙂

Be good to get anti body test too , I have one of my team that had COVID with no symptoms but tested positive for travel , later confirmed he had it with anti body test , and now he has most of the same issues with Iron etc , so you could have had COVID and that could be the root cause , In my case my Hemoglobin was dropping well before vaccine and a good 6 months after my very mild COVID case , I believe it was COVID not the vaccine , but this is all new and will take some time to sort out. Question is will we always have to take Iron now or will it level off and stay with us ?

I was receiving an unexpected Iron Infusion today. I’m a 78 year old female with lots of underlying conditions so thought it was just one more thing. I am fully vaccinated with Pfizer. Mine was one of the last infusions of the day, and since I had never had one before the Infusion Nurse and I started talking. She said she was sure it would be fine since they’d already had 9 today. I asked if that was a lot and she said yes it was a lot and that there had more than usual lately. I took iron pills a couple times in my life so I asked if there were more women then men. She hesitated for a minute said that 9 of the 10 were women. I decided to google it, and here I am. Seems worth reporting, and I’ll advise the CDC on my next update as well as talk to my Doctor. Any insight is appreciated!

Good morning @jsmhdm, it's nice to meet you. I think that everyone would like to know how much immunity we all have after being fully vaccinated. But, unfortunately, there really isn't any test available to do that now. We know that no vaccine is guaranteed to be100% . We know that vaccines usually are very, very effective for several months and that may be a booster will be needed. There is a lot of research on this so hopefully, we will have something soon.

The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein test is used to check for antibodies for Covid 19. But it only shows whether there are antibodies in the blood, specifically IgM/IgG spike proteins which could be either from direct exposure to Covid-19 or from the vaccination. Having the antibodies is a good sign but it does nothing to directly tell us the level of our immunity to the virus.

Does this make sense?
