Intrathecal Pain Pump

Posted by duckski44 @duckski44, Jun 21, 2025

I’ve have an intrathecal pain pump for many years, just trying to connect with others that have this device to chat with people about effectiveness and drug therapies.

@heisenberg34 and all... So sorry... the vomiting is a tough side effect and, yes, my 57 year old son experienced severe vomiting for a time, tapering to less but still there. He takes Zofran as needed if it'it's continues. I also got Bonine ear patches, for sea sickness. They do help!

I started him on an excellent daily Probiotic by Probulin. Referred by doc for my IBD. It helps him greatly with diarrhea and vomiting issues. A good add.

He has Dilaudid and Backlofen in his pump. Morphine did nothing but make him vomit. No pain relief. Dilaudid is helping.

Hope this helps you some.
Blessings, Elizabeth

@ess77 Thanks a lot for your reply. Did your son experience vomiting after his trial with dilaudud? My current spell of vomiting is really weird. I can almost predict when it's going to happen. When I first wake up, I will have this strange feeling. Hard to describe. But it is not always there, But, when it is, I can almost always expect a series of "vomitus eruptus". Other days it just comes on, out of the blue, very suddenly, Then I have to literally run to the bathroom. This will often be repeated several times until there is nothing left to expel. Wish I could figure it out. Will likely have to go back to Gastro/Enterologist and see if he can figure it out.

@heisenberg34 and all... This is quite similar to my son's experience. His also included diarrhea and severe constipation...until I got Probulin Probiotic colon support for daily use. It works like a miracle! No more drinking bottles of Miralax! Fewer vomit attacks, and he eats a small something before taking any oral meds. Takes Pantoprozole to help his stomach. Zofran and nausea patches if needed.. not so much now.
He had vomiting for years, not just after beginning the pump. Regularly until I helped with the Probulin probiotic, And other things. Now, those are minor issues.

Dilaudid is a good drug for him. Morphine gave little relief and nausea. I, too, have severe nausea with morphine, and it does not touch my pain!

Hope this helps. You are not alone in these fun effects. Yucky... but he will do anything for some pain relief!

Blessings, Elizabeth

@heisenberg34 and all...
What does your pain doc say about the vomiting and poor pain relief? Any help there? Does he suggest changing the medication to see if a different drug works better for you? Might be good to have a heart to heart with him about helping you out!

@ess77 I have an appointment later this week with him. I am scheduled for an ultrasound of my stomach tomorrow of my stomach. I also have a script coming for a medication to help with the vomiting. They recommended taking Pedialyte to help keep my electrolytes up. Thanks for checking in.

@ess77 So glad that he has finally found something that helps! This pain pump with Dilaudid has little effect on my pain.

@heisenberg34 and all... I must misunderstand. I thought your pump is Morphine, not Dilaudid. Just checking for clarification. Your doctor needs to know your issues and take whatever action is appropriate. I think Pedialyte is a great help for us. I neglected to do that for my son, but should have... or rather, his doctor should have added it to his instructions. My son is fiercely independent and private. He learned to distrust the medical folks across the board. Doctors regularly let him down through the years. He will only now, with my strong urging for his best interests tell the doctors what they need to know for his best care. He's getting there...
I'm hopeful the appointment goes well and you speak up clearly as your best advocate for good medical care.

I have severe Arachnoiditis secondary to severe DDD, About 85 percent of my extremely severe pain from Nerves, severe bilateral sciatica & nerve pain in both feet, top & bottom of both feet. I have non stop nerve pain (sciatica) bilateral hour after hour. I live in Phoenix area & i get 10 mg of oxycontin 4 times a day. It does nothing, at this point, for my pain. I had a trial of pain pump, but very little back pain, ALL my very severe pain is from horrendous nerve pain, not from my back. No one is at all sympathetic regarding my level of pain. My pain doc won't change my medication, the docs in the ER S know nothing about pain treatment & they have no interest in treating severe pain. I am about totally disabled from my level of pain. I am bed bound ( for most part) & i am so sick of being treated like an addict, from The Opioid crisis. The entire attitude about this subject is based on the Opioid Crisis. I have never had any problems with my medication or adverse behavior Does the Pump work on nerve pain I would like to get the Pump, but don't know if it works on nerve pain. My spine pain is minimal & i'm sick of my entire life being ruined from horrific pain & the horrific attitude of doctors in the Phoenix area. My pain doc, is totally ignorant about Arachnoiditis. Can any one tell me if the Pump works on severe nerve pain??I hate to have this surgery with poor results. Pain is so severe, i want to end it all. I'm at the end of my rope. No one can live with this amount of horrific pain. I am fed up with it all

@laurenseavertson789 I had the trial of the pump. Morphine did not help. Then, hydromorphone dropped my pain down to about a 2. Unfortunately, the permanent implant did not help... except for one day(I know, it's crazy. No one can explain it). If I were in the pain that you are in, I would definitely try the pump. Good luck!

I've had a pump since 2012, just had my 3rd implanted. Are you taking any meds by mouth? If so, are they influencing the pump meds? Have you had a second opinion from another doctor equal to the one that serves you? Or a pain management clinic? When they did a workup on me they snipped my hair to reveal everything in my system. I am lucky, in all these years I've had medical problems, but not my pump. I hope you find the problem. Take care.

@ess77 When you say that your son has gained a distrust of the medical community, I can understand completely. My PCP is a nurse practitioner, and she is great. For routine things like a quick checkup, I can usually get in the same day.
My PM doc has been of little help. I have a pain pump which he does a decent job of managing. However, he has done nothing else to help me. My pain pump was implanted over three years ago and has not given me a lick of pain relief except for one day. I have implored him to try some other things to help with this pain, but he can't be bothered. I have gotten a little testy during my last two visits. Now, he is totally indifferent, refilling my pump yesterday while saying nothing. Put a band-aid on the injection site, then left, telling his assistant to set up the next appointment. Here's your hat, what's your hurry. I would try a different PM doc if thesre was one in our are. Sadly, I have not been able to find one so far.
