Insomnia and depression

Posted by Iraku @iraku, Jun 21, 2012

I have noticed after the anti-depressant kicks in my insomnia has been slowly increasing. I feel wide awake for some period and then becoming so tired and thought that I could sleep but then when the light is off and I just slowly back to becoming wide awake again. I usually unable to sleep around mid night, the usual hour that I can fall asleep will moving away from 3 am to later and later. No matter how I tried to tired myself out and go to bed at normal hour, it won't happen. Please help!

Thank you abby. As I said, I highly suspect that my depression had something to do with it. I'll have to bring it up with my therapist and psychiatrist.

Have you talked with a sleep doctor or had a sleep study? That's something I did early in my search for what was wrong with me.

My anxiety and depression tend to keep me awake, as has been a problem for nearly two years. Are there any ways to induce sleep without taking medications? I've tried baths and writing, even having some non-caffeinated tea before bedtime, but none of it seems to work. If there are any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them!

Hi, @underedwardstale2018 -- thinking of you and wondering how your sleep is going these days?

Hi, @underedwardstale2018 -- I am sure you must be frustrated with trying to get some sleep and having trouble doing so for nearly two years. What I've done here is to merge your post with a previous long, yet a bit older, thread on insomnia and depression, in hopes that some of the members might return and give you their insights on dealing with insomnia that is related to depression and anxiety.

I also think that @jimhd, @sandysandytoes14, @gailb, @coloradogirl, @panewdayphyl, @oldkarl and @amberpep may have some thoughts for you.

You might check out this thread on sleep hygiene to see if any of the tips there might help you: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/sleep-hygine/bookmark/?ajax_hook=action&_wpnonce=986e905a25

Have you by chance mentioned this sleep issue to your doctor and mentioned you'd like some tips on self-care that would not involve medication?

Hello I am 47 years old. Ibe dealt 20 years with pmdd a type of reproductive depression. I had a completely hysterectomy for that. At Mayo Clinic Rochester. I live in Ecuador snd doing fine on cbd oil, zoloft, estradiol patches. My maim concern is sleep. My country is in an economic crisis so it will take some months to find a job. Bc of this I can't return to Mayo Clinic for a psychiatric and autoinmune condition ollow up. I don't trust doctors here so I will do talk therapy for anxiety. I still have my international ihealth insurance. How can I get the care I need ? Is there any way to receive psychiatrist treatment by Skype. I am sure I just need some dosage adjustment. Thanks

Hi, @lorena1egas - that completely makes sense that due to your country's economic crisis and the job situation, it is not possible at this time to return to Mayo Clinic for a follow-up. What I would suggest is to message any physician you've seen at Mayo Clinic before on the patient portal and ask about availability of telemedicine consults.

Will you share a bit more about the insomnia you are experiencing? For example, is it hard to get to asleep or stay asleep, or are you waking up before you'd planned and unable to get back to sleep?

Hi Lisa, thanks for your polite answer. my reumatologist keep tracking my situation every 3 months (I send the blood tests through the patient portal). But a Mayo psychiatrist check me once and he was extreme acertive (neuryl/clonazepam) for rem sleep, and zoloft for my long term condition. No matter what, sometimes there is a need to make adjustments because of external factors or internal (hormone changes) and I can trust a psychiatrist here at my country then they just make prescriptions over prescriptions and thats it I cant trust my mental health to money oriented medical staff. No research, no listening techniques, no patient approach. so my question is if it is possible to have a psychiatric appointment through telemedicine consults? mayo clinic have my clinical history and I still keep my international insurance. About my sleep, it is my big problem, after I did my complete hysterectomy due to premenstrual disforic disorder (also at Mayo) and use excelent estradiol patches, but medication is a must. I also take cbd oil that help with mood and my autoinmune condition (inflamation) and I dont want to stop it. when my sleep suffers I am not a person anymore. Right now I am doing fine thanks to a prescription of clonazepam, but I wont return to that pseudo MD. Do you think there is a chance that I can continue a psychiatric follow up with mayo clinic staff on the long term? That would give me peace of mind. thanks for helping

Hi, @lorena1egas - apologies for the delay in responding. Since here on Mayo Clinic Connect we work with patient and caregiver support rather than appointments and medical consults, what I would suggest is sending a portal message either to the Mayo Clinic psychiatrist who consulted with you about sleep (or to your Mayo Clinic rheumatologist, if not in your list of physicians on the portal) to inquire about long-term psychiatric follow-up.

I can relate to your experience. I hardy sleep when I feel I should. I am only able to sleep from 12 am to 4am. Even so, my sleep is shallow, an insect bite or a footsteps can awaken me from sleep.

Hi, @peejayo - that sounds very hard only sleeping 4 hours per night. Do you feel depression or some other factor is contributing to your lack of sleep?
