I know how it feels to watch a grandchild suffer like this. My granddaughter could not tolerate breast milk nor formulas .. she was “failure to thrive”. She was referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist. She was put on a special formula .. expensive and worked. It smelled awful and the diaper changes were awful. She was able to tolerate regular milk and foods within a few months. I cannot give you an exact timetable. She is will be 9 years old soon.
Try and get a referral to pediatric gastroenterologist. I hope your handsome grandson will soon be eating well.
After he eats do not lay him down flat. With reflux he could aspirate. My daughter had colic when a baby and she would not burp holding her on my shoulder and patting/rubbing her back .. I found that while I was sitting if I laid her across my lap (nearer my knees though) bounced her very slightly and rubbed her back she would burp. This helped some with granddaughter too. Also holding them on their left side for a bit helped. My son.. he had reflux bad. He did best .. as did my daughter .. with the carnation milk (canned evaporated milk) formula with vitamins and a bit of karo syrup. I think the recipe can still be found online. I wish I had more ideas.

What a cutie! It’s not easy adjusting to life outside mom. There are so many factors affecting digestion. Sometimes it’s just an immature digestive system which will get better with time.
Is the baby breast or formula fed? What changes have been made so far by his pediatrician?
My grandson also had a difficulty feeding- causing my daughter sleepless nights!
Hello @620915122k and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Congratulations on your grandson!
I wanted to share a link to some information you may find useful as you all navigate feeding issues.

I have many of the same questions posed by the other two members who have joined this discussion to support you so will let you catch up on sharing if you're comfortable.
Thank you! My grandson gained 9 ounces. So we are happy. Will continuing following doctors orders. The information given on your link was ver informative which I shared with daughter!❤️🙏❤️
Was breast feeding but now is formula feeding. What helped your daughter’s baby?
I see your grandson gained 9 oz- that’s great!
My grandson had severe reflux and had poor weight gain. Initially breastfed, but my daughter couldn’t produce enough milk. He was tried on a couple of different formulas, but it didn’t make much difference. He got medication and they thickened the formula with rice cereal to make it heavier and minimize reflux as well as positioning him so the liquids would be less likely to come up.
Once he started on solid foods it got better.
It is a very difficult situation.
Just follow the pediatrician’s advice. There are times when the baby needs to see a specialist, such as if there is no weight gain.
It is traumatic for the mother and she also needs a lot of support. Mothers often feel like failures this early after birth with the hormones flowing and all.
Let’s hope your grandson continues gaining weight.
Please let us know how he is doing in the near future!
Thank you so much for your moral support❤️🙏❤️
