I am Having a Septal Myectomy

Hello, I will be having a Septal Myectomy in April. Can those of you who have been through this, tell me about the experience? What was your experience with the Heart/Lung machine and what was your experience with the wiring of your sternum? Anything that you can tell me would be appreciated.

Are you having your upcoming surgery in Rochester? If so, you will be in the best hands, as you would be in any other COE (Center of Excellence) for this surgery. At Mayo, I was told that there is a 99+% success rate. The experience is different for each of us because of our particular HOCM physiologies and our physical shape ahead of time. I remember nothing about the heart-lung machine, you will be under heavy anesthesia, I woke up about 4 hours after surgery was over. I think the sternum was glued in my case, do not remember stitches or any discomfort, just that full upper body movement was compromised for a time. Could not drive for a month, an accident would impact that area. Others will chime in and we will answer any nonmedical questions you will have. It's OK to be terrified, I was; I was reassured every step of the way, happened July, 2022 and I never regretted it.

I am having my surgery at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Aurora Colorado. My doctor is Dr Cleveland.

At the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, is the incision glued and not stapled? Did you have to have oxygen after you were discharged? We plan on staying in the area for a couple days before driving home to Arkansas. Many have said no pain pills, only Tylenol. Is this true? Plan on stopping every hour to walk around and stopping halfway to spend the night. Admit, it is the unknown that is frightening. I have read all these boards to try to get all the information I can to ease my anxiety..Sharon

At the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, is the incision glued and not stapled? Did you have to have oxygen after you were discharged?
