Hypnosis ?

Posted by stuckonu @stuckonu, Sun, Sep 15 8:51am

Hello all,
Today is my second day on connects, first day as a member. I’m posting a question about hypnosis not because I have actual first hand experience but more because my mind is wandering and wondering….since I’m an artist this is a good thing for me. However, I find that, just like what most people think when looking at abstract art; they don’t get it.
I’ve already considered 25 ways of continuing this discussion but that is one way the I lose an audience. So I’m going to work on keeping it relative.
Not everyone can submit to hypnotism. That fact aside I’m wondering if anyone has had experience with it and are you willing to share some details?
Science and medicine knows about “ The Placebo Affect “ wouldn’t you agree that if you dig deep to think about it, isn’t TPA a little, maybe a lot like self hypnosis?
Inquiring mind wants to know.
Thanks for your contribution

Hi @stuckonu I'd like to introduce you to @rckj @gingerw and @kbmayo all have experience with hypnosis or have mentioned hypnosis in the past who may be able to offer you support.

Here is what Mayo Clinic has to say on the subject of hypnosis: https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/hypnosis/about/pac-20394405

What has your research found? Have you looked into finding a way to personally do hypnosis?

PS as fate would have it, as I was writing my last post with CBS SUNDAY MORNING on in the back ground I hear this short story about a boy from East Hartford Ct who has Down’s syndrome and another learning disability; Autism, perhaps. Here’s what reached in and grabbed me because his mom talked about how the double Illness finds her sun struggling to concentrate. She noticed that we was quite while watching something outside a window; turned out to be a flag in a neighbors yard.
I recalling hearing a Koan which is a type of metaphorical puzzle mindfully considering life. The koan I recalled was about 3 practicing Buddhist; one was a master; one student noticed a flag blowing in the wind and comments: “ FLAG MOVES “ the other commented : “ WIND MOVES “ the longer practicing Buddhist replied: “ no, “ MIND MOVES “

Good Morning EM and others, TY for responding, I certainly will read and continue to do research. My own experience beyond fascination happened in college will in a program specifically customized for those who were considering becoming a social worker. A professor on loan so to speak from Antioch was trained in hypnosis and with everyone’s consent he attempted to demo with a group hypnosis. We were advised before he started that not everyone would react to the process demonstration. Nearly everyone was affected except 2 of us; I was 1 of 2. That allowed me to observe. I wished that I could figure out why I was not able in that moment to respond as the others did and have been interested every since that day but have not found the place or The hypnotherapist to go to for another try.
That said I believe that there may be levels and or types of hypnotism that are affective but happen without the “ consent “ of the one being hypnotized. My example is “ subliminal advertising “ as an exact example of what I mean.
I can give more examples but it makes more sense to me to hear your thoughts on this post. Of course I welcome all replies.

TY Very much for your welcoming and thoughtful first reply

@stuckonu Thank you @ethanmcconkey for tagging me in on this conversation. My sister has had hypnotherapy training, and twice she did this on me as I was preparing for medical procedures. First off, I believe that a person has to be open to the idea of hypnosis, and be trusting of the person performing it. This is true for healing modalities as well; you have to say "yes" to the process, physically/mentally/emotionally, for there to be benefit. In my case, when she did the hypnosis, I was able to tolerate the procedures with very minimal discomfort, and shortened recovery times. I feel it was a right fit for me.

It is my feeling that our mind is indeed a powerful force. You can bring better health, or worse health, to yourself, by what/how you think.

Hi, @stuckonu – I wanted to join @ethanmcconkey in welcoming you to Mayo Clinic Connect. I also thought that @georgette12 @robbinr @marazion @ladybirder might have some input for you on hypnosis.

For what purpose were you looking to use hypnosis, stuckonu?

I seem to be offering the same opinion that I just posted under the topic of ECT . But it's valid for me, personally .
That is, what works for one person will not necessarily work for another, even under similar circumstances. People are just too unique to project an absolute result . Ya just gotta take the leap and try it for yourself, whatever the modality. I studied hypnotherapy for years, along with other non-medical therapies. I did experience success, but then, we each have a different vision of what success looks like.

Hi Lisa, my nubiness is getting in the way of me knowing what to do with the @……x all the members you listed. Do I PM them or click their name and find a mention of hypnosis?
I’m also wondering if those with the power moved my post? I’m not upset if they did but I thought I posted this question in a group that specifically applied to an issue I’m dealing with…most recently I had that SBO attack. STRESS, has become moved to a new level. Pain is both chronic and acute. Coping and communication has also shifted gears and become difficult to manage. Where I posted this I don’t recall
