Hydrocodone after RnY Bypass

Posted by hsokphilly @hsokphilly, 5 days ago

15 years after RnY bypass, I had a growth removed from the top of my wrist, which turned out to be cancerous. Today I had a larger piece of skin removed which showed no additional cancer. Tylenol is not helping the pain so my wife offered me hydrocodone with acetaminophen 5-325. Is this safe for me to take after so many post-op years?

Welcome to Mayo Connect. Congratulations on keeping the weight off. Members on Connect can share their experience, but most are not medical professionals, so they cannot answer specific medical questions.

I had my RNY 13 years ago, and I still avoid ibuprofen and Aleve. I do take a baby aspirin daily, which was recommended by my provider for another medical condition. I have been given prescription pain meds after procedures, etc.. , always short-term. I am very careful about taking anything that might irritate the pouch and cause ulcers. And as you know, it is not a good idea to take others' prescription meds.

Have you contacted your provider about pain? Are they willing to prescribe something short-term?

Thank you for your reply. I no longer need the pain killer; Tylenol helped by day 1 after the surgery.
