Humor as a Coping Tool

Posted by osun6 @osun6, Dec 18, 2011

We are interested in hearing how you have used humor to help you cope with your disease. We believe that humor can be an effective tool when facing life threatening illness. Please tell us your stories.

So true, @sofaramnotdead. Comedies are not what they used to be. I will often go to YouTube and watch an old Jack Benny show, he knew how to be funny without even trying. Here's to a smile, laugh or grin for the day😊

Lots of good clean humor on YouTube. What’s My Line is one of my favorites. Back when the sets were simple and not a bunch of glitter. A time when folks spoke proper grammar and were polite. Call me old fashioned and I am not an old hippy. Stereotyping one because of age is shallow. There I go on my soapbox and going off topic. Humor has pulled me out more than once. 🤪

Me too, @parus. My growing up was rather chaotic and I remember having a passion for I Love Lucy shows and similar ones. They were just hilarious and gave me a break from the real world I was living in.

Yes, @lioness, black and white is the original way they were made and still the best. No distractions there.

Another great black and white tv show comedy was the Dick Van Dyke show. Watching through that one for a second time.

@ethanmcconkey I think we lived in the best times so many different comedies to lift us up

Barney Miller is another favorite of mine. Captain Miller's ability to keep his varied detectives on one page and the criminals contained always strikes my funny bone.😂

When I was in college, I thought that everything was funny, in an absurdist way. Now that I am 60, I don't find anything funny. At night, I tell my wife, "Let's watch a movie, but I only want to watch comedies." But there are actually not that many comedies produced by Hollywood. When I was younger, I did open-mic stand-up in restaurants and nightclubs. So, if Hollywood can't produce enough comedies that are truly funny, I'm going to have to create my own.
I'll put the first one on YouTube soon. I can't guarantee that it will make anyone, including myself, laugh. But it will be completely absurdist, that's for sure!

@osun6 thank you for starting this discussion. I sometimes have those "why me Lord? I've been good…" days and humor definitely brings me out of them and provides new perspectives. I've always struggled with diet and weight and this parody made my day when I first saw it.

Really describes the ravages of food addiction. This needs a 12step approach and perhaps a low elimination of trigger goods. It's a long, slow process, but doable.

I liked Golden Girls.

Mr. Ed still tops my list.

@hopeful33250 I was interviewing my horse and putting a microphone in front of him in one of my videos. He got shy about speaking, so I had him whisper in my ear. He's a good boy and likes to help me out.

@parus I love Mr. Ed! I like to use my horse in my videos, and we were filming me riding up to the camera on a trail through the woods, and I would pull my horse up sideways to the camera and stop, and I talked and gave the information about my art show. In one of the takes, the words were barely out of my mouth, when my horse relieved himself. I was laughing and then the camera cuts off because of the sudden flash flood headed right for the camera man.

The farrier who trims his hooves is a young woman, and the first time she worked with him, and picked up the left rear leg, it activated a switch somewhere that started in motion something that was going to fall and land right on top of the beautiful braid she had in her hair. She was focused enough that it didn't register when I kept telling her she should move, so I rescued her by pushing her out of the way at the last possible moment……. and the next time she came and picked up that left rear leg, it activated the same switch, but we were ready for it and laughing about it.
