Huff technique is very uncomfortable

Posted by picartist @picartist, Sep 12 6:55pm

I have tried the Huff technique many times and find it so uncomfortable that I tend to avoid doing it and just use saline and my acapella. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to develop this slowly and still be effective.

So interesting to read all these comments about huff coughing. It causes me a lot of stress. I have been taught how to do it at my physio sessions and they have checked that I do it correctly. I have a saline nebuliser now and it works well. So tricky fitting all this airway clearance in on my 3 working days as a teacher! I am still waiting for the results of my most recent CT scan done in early August. My NTM is back but we are still watching and waiting. My pulmonary rehab sessions have been excellent and it is great being with other people in a group who have similar concerns about breathlessness and coughing etc. Exercise is great and learning to pace yourself on a daily basis is key. As we are now in the flu season we need to take extra care of ourselves. Learn to say 'no' and put yourself first. Quality of life is so important.

Yes, balance is crucial. Today we cut 2 stops from our weeks long road trip to put in some relaxation time. It's hard for me, but if I don't ration mt energy, I'm just begging for a big crash.

I am with you. At one session I was so nauseous. I haven't used it since which is not good either.
Also, the albuterol I am suppose to be taking twice a day makes me shake so much I can't function. I plan to reduce that dose and see what happens.
Good luck!

Oks. I was shaking really bad and my heart was racing and pounding for a few hours after my AC routine. It changed when albuterol was changed to levalbuterol which was suggested by my allergist. My pulmonologist agreed and shaking, heart pounding/ racing stopped. So ask your dr and try. Best wishes

In addition to hypertonic nebs, aerobika & smart vest, I use the free "autogenic drainage" app. You can customize how long you want to do it, and when it is time for huff cough, you may be able to do at least a partial because you are doing some good "unsticking" with the breathing. Anyone else use the app?

I used to use AD app, and at the time it was a life saver. As time went on I determined that I could skip the app and all its counting, which was quite time consuming. Instead, I've replaced the app with huff coughing, which works well for me by itself. It's worth mentioning that I do not have issues producing sputum.

I have trouble with huff cough.
I've watched a couple of videos posted here and on youtube.
PD sent in a RT to show me how to huff cough.
She had her mask on the whole time!
I'm having so much pain from trying huff cough and probably aerobika session.
Just a side note I do have osteoporosis and untreated whiplash.

I'm just using my Acapella now, giving up on Huff Coughing unless a middle of the night emergency.

I use it, but not daily, and I like it.
