Does HPV cancer need its own designated support group?

Posted by harleytiger @harleytiger, 6 days ago

If Melanoma and Thyroid cancer has its own support groups, then HPV Cancer should have its group as well. I think the group should help decide if it's needed or not? I feel it is very much needed.

I might add that I was disappointed when they pulled the staples from my neck before Halloween. I was planning on going as Frankenstein.

@56tburd My trach hole did not heal and had to be closed four months later. In the meantime my wife was considering renting me out to kids birthday parties to blow up balloons from my neck.

@hrhwilliam what a great sense of humor you have. I told my grandkids the hole left from the feeding tube is where I was shot. They know better. One really has to have a sense of humor to get through some of these situations. Not everyone does.

@56tburd
I like to tell people my scar is from a knife fight. They look at at me like it could be true!

I agree with harleytiger, for all the reasons that he stated. So, what "exactly" is the criteria for a new group and "who" decides?

@ja963 It has been decided by the Connect Moderator. Subdividing the head and neck group by cause type would not help. We are a patient to patient community, helping others who are going through treatment or recovery or learning to live with long term conditions. How we got the cancer is not really relevant other than for initial treatment, which is really not our department save for possible suggestions. It is up to the patient to divulge or not, pertinent information as to their specific case. The care and treatments we get, HPV caused or not, are much the same and the issues are the same.
In addition, not everyone gets the HPV panel test because a) it is still relatively new, b) some oncologists are not concerned about the cause, only the cure. To say to someone that they are in this group or that group is like having an investment group and saying that new money people and old money people have to not share information about investments. The information is pretty much the same. The choice to share or not share is pretty much up to the individual patient.
There are specific groups on Facebook and other interactive social web sites. Anyone is welcome to start there own podcast or whatever you wish. It is a freedom not found everywhere. But to walk into someone's house and ask the owner to repaint the walls because you don't agree with the color is a bit stepping over the boundary. You are of course allowed to speak your mind. People know I do.

@hrhwilliam Hello Bill, I appreciate all you've done for the group and I don't mean to step on your toes, but I disagree you on many levels.
