How to start the discussion about seeing a specialist?

When I first knew there was a problem, I made an appointment for my husband with his primary care physician, who quickly recognized his cognitive decline symptoms and referred him to a gerontologist. I didn’t discuss it much with my husband beforehand.
I don’t press the point with my husband but occasionally, when needed, I say ‘’you don’t remember new things the same way you used to,’’ or something similar which describes the core issue in our case. His brain has changed making it much more difficult for him to make new memories. Many, many parts of life are still enjoyable and I focus on those.

@casey24 This sounds like a very difficult question you’re facing. I’ve faced many problems but not one like this. I agree with @walkesu who talked about taking her husband for a PCP appointment. The doctor talked to the husband and noticed forgetfulness. He, then, was able to make a referral to a doctor who could do the necessary testing. If/when your wife brings it up later, just talk about your visit with the PCP. If her memory is no longer acute, simply remind her that you love her and want to care for her. Just your concern for her tells me that you’ll do fine.

I can only share our experience.
When I started to notice my husband's red flags, we made an appointment with his PCP, then he was referred to a Neuropsychologist (we have no Neurologists in our smallish town). The Neuropsychologist diagnosed him the first year with MCI, then 2nd year bv/FTD (frontotemporal dementia, Behavioral variant).
Meanwhile his PCP had referred him over a year ago to a Neurologist out of town, and now over a year later we are still waiting for that appointment (apparently we don't have too many Neurologists in our State).
I think folks that live nearer to a Mayo Clinic site are having an easier time getting more rapid diagnoses.
